Bears rout Tigers

 

Freshman Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., collected a pair of doubles and drove in four runs as the DMACC baseball team swept its season series against Marshalltown Community College (MCC) with a 19-5 win over the Tigers April 8 at Marshalltown.

 

The Bears, who defeated MCC 14-0 and 7-4 March 26 at the DMACC baseball diamond, improved to 13-20 overall and 7-8 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with the win.

 

DMACC never trailed in the game, taking a 4-2 lead after the first inning. The Bears used a seven-run rally in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from sophomore Colin Driscoll of Waukee, for an 11-2 advantage and added two runs in the third, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the seventh. MCC, which fell to 7-23 and 0-14, scored single runs in the second, third and sixth innings in addition to its two runs in the bottom of the first.

 

Leininger, Driscoll and sophomores Jackson Manning of Keosauqua and Carter Bryan of Johnston had two hits apiece in the win. Manning, Bryan and freshmen Blake Crancer of Normal, Ill., and Jake Espeland of Des Moines drove in two runs apiece.

 

Sophomore Carter Woollums of Johnston pitched the first six innings and ran his record to 6-3 with the win. He allowed five runs on nine hits, struck out three and walked one. Freshman Zach Turpin of Waukee pitched one inning, allowing one walk and striking out one batter.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Southeastern Community College (SECC) in a single game April 10 at the DMACC baseball diamond. SECC leads the ICCAC at 14-0 and is 29-6 overall. The Blackhawks are ranked fourth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
