DMACC baseball team splits doubleheader with NECC

Freshman Brock Moore of Urbandale drove in four runs and sophomores Jackson Manning of Keosauqua and Kaden Frommelt of Marion drove in three runs apiece to lead the DMACC baseball team to a 14-11 win over Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) in the second game of a doubleheader April 2 at the DMACC baseball team.

 

NECC won the opener, 10-4.

 

The split gives DMACC an 11-18 overall record and a 5-6 mark in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Moore, Manning, Frommelt and freshman Archer Ogbourne of Carlisle had three hits apiece in the Bears' win, including two doubles from Manning and one each by Moore and Frommelt, who both homered. DMACC got another home run from freshman Jake Espeland of Des Moines and Ogbourne added a triple.

 

DMACC led 1-0 after the first inning before falling behind 3-1 as NECC tallied three runs in the top of the second. The Bears answered with seven runs in the bottom of the inning and led the rest of the way. They were up 8-4 after three innings, 9-5 after five innings, 11-5 after six innings and 14-8 after seven innings. NECC made it interesting with three runs in the top of the eighth.

 

DMACC used six pitchers in the game. Sophomore Bobby Uthe of Ames started and went an inning and two-thirds, allowing three runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake went two innings and was awarded the win, giving him a 1-1 record. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out one and walked three. Freshman Rhett Pleggenkuhle of Van Meter also went two innings, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout and two walks and freshman Gage Miller of Mandan, N.D., threw one inning, allowing three runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk. Freshman Jordan Leininger of Fargo, N.D. saw an inning and two-thirds on the mound and gave up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Sophomore Ty Thompson of Council Bluffs earned his first save of the season in two-thirds of an inning, striking out the only two batters he faced.

 

NECC used four runs in the first inning, one each in the fourth and fifth innings and two apiece in the sixth and seventh innings for its win in the first game. DMACC tallied two runs in the first and one each in the third and sixth innings.

 

Manning and freshmen Carter Bryan of Johnston and Martin Smith of Boone led the Bears with two hits apiece, including a double from Manning. Freshman Blake Crancer of Normal, Ill., hit a two-run home run for the Bears.

 

Sophomore Carter Woollums of Johnston pitched all seven innings and fell to 5-3 with the loss. He allowed 10 runs on 11 hits, struck out three and walked two.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play a three-game series against NIACC April 4 and 6 at Mason City. The two teams will play a doubleheader on April 4 and a single game on April 6. NIACC is 17-13 overall and 8-10 in the ICCAC
