The DMACC baseball team improved to 10-14 overall and 4-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after sweeping a doubleheader from Marshalltown Community College (MCC) March 26 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
Sophomore Carter Woollums of Johnston allowed three hits and struck out six in a 14-0 win in the opener and sophomore Bobby Uthe of Ames leveled his record at 1-1 in a 7-4 win in the second game. Woollums ran his record to 5-2 in a game that was called because of the mercy rule after five innings.
DMACC all but put the opener out of reach after scoring seven runs in the first inning. The Bears padded their lead to 11-0 with four runs in the second and tallied their other three runs in the third.
Sophomore Kaden Frommelt of Marion led DMACC at the plate with three hits, including a double, and freshman Blake Crancer of Normal, Ill., had a pair of hits, including a double, and he drove in three runs. Freshman Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., highlighted the Bears' first inning with a three-run home run.
Leininger joined Crancer with three RBIs and freshmen Archer Ogbourne of Carlisle and Austin Anderson of Marion drove in two runs apiece.
DMACC never trailed in winning the second game. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first and led 2-0 after scoring another run in the bottom of the third. They made it a 4-0 game with two runs in the sixth and added their final three runs in the eighth. MCC scored twice in the seventh and once in the ninth.
Crancer, sophomore Jackson Manning of Keosauqua and freshman Brock Moore of Urbandale led DMACC at the plate with two hits apiece, including two doubles by Moore and one from Crancer. Sophomore Matt Rivers of Colfax belted a solo home run and Frommelt added a double.
Frommelt and Crancer drove in two runs apiece.
Uthe worked the first two innings, allowing two hits, walking two batters and striking out two. Freshman Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake went an inning and two-thirds, allowing two hits with one walk and one strikeout and freshman Rhett Pleggenkuhle of Van Meter allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk in two innings on the mound. Freshman Gage Miller of Mandan, N.D., pitched an inning and two-thirds and gave up two runs on one hit with one strikeout and one walk and freshman Zach Turpin of Waukee struck out one batter and walked one in working two-thirds of an inning. Freshman Nick Cox of Polk City earned his second save of the season after pitching an inning and a third. He allowed one run on three hits and walked two batters.
The DMACC baseball team will play a three-game series against Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) March 28 and 29 at Council Bluffs. The two teams will play a doubleheader on March 28 and a single game on March 29. IWCC is 17-12 overall and 5-2 in the ICCAC.
