- Sophomore Cael Boever drives in the lone DMACC run
- Freshman Konner Entz suffers the loss
St. Johns River State College (SJRSC) handed the DMACC baseball team a 3-1 loss May 29 in an elimination game at the 2024 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Baseball World Series, ending the season for the Bears.
DMACC closed the season with a 38-26 record. The season was highlighted by an NJCAA Division II Region 11 championship, a North Plains District title and the Bears' first appearance in the national tournament since 2012. They were one of six teams still playing in the double-elimination tournament at the time of their loss so will add a top six finish to their resume.
SJRSC got the win with two runs in the fifth and an insurance run in the eighth. DMACC scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth.
SJRSC pitchers Aaron Potter and Tyson Greene limited DMACC to just three hits and struck out 12 DMACC batters. Potter went the first seven and a third innings and struck out nine batters. Greene struck out three over an inning and two-thirds.
Sophomore Noah Thein of Dewitt led DMACC with a pair of singles and sophomore Dillon Kuehl of Urbandale added one. The Bears scored their lone run when Thein led off the sixth with a single and took second when sophomore Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale was hit by a pitch. Kuehl grounded out with both runners moving up a base and Thein scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Cael Boever of Sioux City.
DMACC, the tournament's No. 9 seed, used six pitchers in the loss. Freshman Konner Entz of West Fargo, N.D., started and went four innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. He suffered the loss to close the season at 1-1. Sophomore Jacob Sjuts of Humphrey, Neb., went one inning, allowing one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts and sophomore Vinny Maury of Norwalk gave up one run on one hit with one strikeout in two and a third innings on the mound. Sophomore Jai Jensen of Clinton went a third of an inning and surrendered one hit and sophomore Jake Porter of Winterset gave up one hit and walked one batter in two-thirds of an inning. Sophomore Kaleb Gengler of Sioux City also went two-thirds of an inning and retired the only two batters he faced.
SJRSC, seeded fifth, will face top-seeded LSU-Eunice (LSUE) today and must beat the Bengals twice to advance to the championship game. LSUE or SJRSC will face Brunswick Community College (BCC) or East Central (Miss.) Community College (ECCC) in the championship game on May 31 or June 1, pending the outcome of today's games. LSUE and BCC are undefeated in tournament play.
