DMACC baseball team drops 4-2 decision to Iowa Western

 

The DMACC baseball team fell to 28-22 overall and 16-14 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) following a 4-2 loss to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) May 1 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

IWCC, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program, improved to 45-7 overall and 28-2 in the ICCAC with the win. The Reivers are ranked fourth in NJCAA Division I.

 

IWCC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and led 2-1 after DMACC scored in the bottom of the second. The Reivers went up 4-1 with two runs in the seventh and DMACC tallied its second run in the bottom of the eighth.

 

Sophomore Camden Kaufman of Waukee scored for the Bears in the second. He led off the inning with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by sophomore Kannon Coakley of Maquoketa.

 

Sophomore Cael Boever of Sioux City hit a solo home run to account for DMACC's run in the eighth. Boever led the Bears at the plate with two hits.

 

Freshman Carter Woollums of Johnston pitched the first five and two-thirds innings for the Bears and fell to 3-3 with the loss. He allowed two runs on three hits, struck out three and walked five. Sophomore Eli Lehrman of Anamosa pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up two runs on one hit. He also walked a batter. Freshman Brennan Haman of West Fargo, N.D., went an inning and two-thirds, giving up two hits, striking out two batters and walking three. And sophomore Thomas Leiden of Omaha, Neb., pitched one inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

 

The DMACC baseball team will close out the 2023-24 regular season with a three-game series against Southwestern Community College (SWCC) May 4 and 5 at Creston. The two teams will play a doubleheader on May 4 and a single game on May 5. SWCC is also an NJCAA Division I program. The Spartans are 15-38 overall and 8-21 in the ICCAC.
