DMACC baseball team takes two games from Iowa Lakes

 

The DMACC baseball team improved to 27-21 overall and 15-13 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with a pair of wins over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) April 27 at Estherville.

 

The Bears took the opener, 16-3, behind five runs batted in from freshman Sam Hesselmann of Johnston and four RBIs by sophomore Camden Kaufman of Urbandale. Sophomores Dillon Kuehl of Urbandale and Kannon Coakley of Maquoketa and freshman Kaden Frommelt of Marion homered in DMACC's 9-4 win in the second game.

 

Sophomores J.C. Dermody of Council Bluffs and Chance Key of Waverly were the winning pitchers.

 

DMACC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game but fell behind 3-2 when ILCC tallied three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Bears went ahead 6-3 lead with four runs in the top of the fifth and put the game out of reach with six runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.

 

Kaufman, Hesselmann and sophomore Cory Bantam of Woodbine paced DMACC's 15-hit attack with three hits apiece, including a pair of doubles by Hesselmann and one from Kaufman. Sophomore Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale had a pair of base hits and sophomore Cael Boever of Sioux City doubled and drove in two runs.

 

Dermody improved to 3-1 with the win. He pitched six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Jaqson Tejada of Marion pitched one inning and struck out two of the four batters he faced.

 

Ziegler had four hits and Boever, Kaufman and Hesselmann came away with two apiece in DMACC's win in the second game. The Bears trailed 1-0 after two innings and took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth. They closed out the win with two runs in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth. ILCC got a run in the second, one in the seventh and two in the eighth.

 

Coakley led the Bears in RBIs with three and Ziegler drove in two runs. In addition to the home runs by Kuehl, Coakley and Frommelt, DMACC got doubles from Kaufman and Hesselmann.

 

Key pitched the first seven innings and is 7-0 with the win. He allowed two runs on five hits, struck out seven and walked one. Sophomore Jacob Sjuts of Humphrey, Neb., threw one inning and allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk. Freshman Bobby Uthe of Ames also pitched one inning and surrendered two hits.

 

The DMACC baseball team will close out its three-game series against ILCC with a single game today at Estherville. The Lakers are 11-37 overall and 6-22 in the ICCAC
