DMACC baseball team sweeps doubleheader from MCC

 

The DMACC baseball team improved to 25-21 overall and 13-13 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with a pair of wins over Marshalltown Community College April 24 at Marshalltown.

 

The Bears took the nightcap, 10-1, behind four runs batted in from freshman Jackson Manning of Keosauqua and three by freshman Sam Hesselmann of Johnston. Hesselmann drove in a pair of runs in a 6-0 win in the first game.

 

DMACC scored four runs in the second, single runs in the third, seventh and eighth and three runs in the ninth in taking the opener. Hesselmann had a three-run double and the Bears got a run on a fielder's choice in the first. Sophomore Tomas Lee of Minnetonka, Minn., had an RBI base hit in the third, freshman Evan Behn of Boone drove in a run with an infield grounder in the seventh and Manning got his first RBI on an infield grounder in the eighth. He added a three-run single in the ninth.

 

Freshman Brennan Haman of West Fargo, N.D., pitched the first three innings and improved to 3-0 with the win. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out six and walked one. Sophomore Vinny Mauro of Norwalk threw five innings and allowed four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore Alex Berends of Story City pitched one inning and retired all three batters he faced.

 

DMACC took the second game with two runs in the first, two in the second and one run in each of the fifth and seventh innings.

 

Hesselmann had an RBI single and the Bears scored on a fielder's choice in the first and a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Cael Boever of Sioux City got DMACC a 4-0 lead after two innings. Hesselmann drove in the Bears' run in the fifth with a double and Manning's infield grounder accounted for the run in the seventh.

 

Freshman Carter Woollums of Johnston pitched all seven inning and won his third game of the season against two losses. He allowed six hits, struck out six and walked two.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) in a three-game series April 27 and 28 at Estherville. The two teams will play a doubleheader on April 27 and a single game on April 28. ILCC is 11-35 overall and 6-20 in the ICCAC.
