  • Sophomore Maddox Johnston drives in five runs

Sophomores Maddox Johnston of Chanhassen, Minn., and Camden Kaufman of Waukee drove in five and four runs respectively to lead the DMACC baseball team

to a 22-12 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) April 23 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

The win gives the Bears a 23-21 overall record and a 11-13 mark in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). DMACC also won its season series against the Tritons, who are ranked seventh in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). ICCC came away with a 11-9 decision in 10 innings March 19 at Fort Dodge and DMACC was a 5-3 winner in a game March 25 at Fort Dodge.

The Bears used a 10-run rally in the second inning as a catapult to their latest win. They trailed 5-0 after the first inning, led 10-5 after the second inning and 14-8 behind a four-run rally in the fourth. ICCC made it a 14-12 game with four runs in the top of the fifth and DMACC closed out the win with three runs in the bottom of the inning and five runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Johnston had just one hit in five plate appearances, that being a bases-loaded triple during the second-inning rally. He drove in a run on an infield grounder in the fourth and got an RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.

Kaufman hit a three-run home run in the second and had a run-scoring double in the seventh.

Sophomore Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale had two hits and three RBIs in the win and sophomore Cael Boever of Sioux City had three hits and two RBIs. Ziegler had a two-run home run in the second and doubled in a run in the seventh. Boever hit run-scoring doubles in the second and fifth innings.

Sophomore Kannon Coakley of Maquoketa scored five DMACC runs after reaching base on five consecutive walks.

Sophomore Jackson Horras of Pekin started for DMACC but wasn't credited with any innings pitched. He allowed three runs on one hit and walked two batters. Sophomore Max Martin of Franklin, Wis., relieved Horras and worked four innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk. He came away with the win, his second of the season against one loss. Sophomore Jacob Sjuts of Humphrey, Neb., threw one inning and allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk and sophomore Eli Lehrman of Anamosa went one inning, allowing one hit, striking out one batter and walking one. Freshman Konner Entz of West Fargo, N.D., pitched one inning and allowed one hit.

The DMACC baseball team will play a doubleheader against Marshalltown Community College (MCC) today at Marshalltown. MCC is 10-32 overall and 2-21 in the ICCAC. DMACC defeated the Tigers, 8-7, in a single game April 10 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
