DMACC baseball team goes 1-3 in games against SECC and KCC

The DMACC baseball team fell to 22-21 overall and 10-13 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after losing three of four games against Southeastern Community College (SECC) and Kirkwood Community College (KCC) April 19 to 21.

 

SECC took a 4-3 decision from the Bears April 19 at West Burlington and DMACC split a pair of games against KCC on April 20 at the DMACC baseball diamond, losing the opener, 8-6, and winning the nightcap, 6-4. KCC closed out the three-game series with a 15-2 win in eight innings on April 21.

 

SECC and KCC are ranked sixth and tenth respectively in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

 

DMACC broke a 2-2 tie against SECC with a run in the top of the ninth but the Black Hawks responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to come away with the win.

 

Sophomore Kannon Coakley of Maquoketa paced DMACC's seven-hit attack with a pair of singles and sophomores Jaylen Ziegler and Dillon Kuehl, both of Urbandale, and freshman Jackson Manning of Keosauqua drove in one run apiece. Manning accounted for the Bears' only extra-base hit with a double.

 

SECC led 1-0 after the first inning and DMACC tied it with a run in the top of the third. SECC went up 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth and DMACC tied it again with a run in the sixth.

 

Freshman Carter Woollums of Johnston pitched eight and two-thirds innings for DMACC and fell to 2-2 with the loss. He allowed four runs on six hits, struck out six and walked two.

 

DMACC led KCC 5-2 after four innings in the first game on April 20 but the Eagles rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth for a 6-5 lead. DMACC tied it with a run in the bottom of the inning before KCC got the win with one run each in the seventh and eighth innings.

 

DMACC got three hits from Manning and two each from sophomore Noah Thein of Dewitt and freshman Colin Driscoll of Waukee. Manning, Thein and Driscoll drove in one run apiece as did Ziegler and sophomores Cory Bantam of Woodbine and Camden Kaufman of Waukee. Thein and freshman Sam Hesselmann of Johnston each doubled for the Bears' only extra-base hits.

 

Sophomore J.C. Dermody of Council Bluffs pitched the first six innings for DMACC, allowing six runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Eli Lehrman of Anamosa went an inning and two-thirds and suffered the loss to fall to 1-2 for the season. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two batters. Sophomore Max Martin of Franklin, Wis., pitched an inning and a third and walked one batter.

 

DMACC scored two runs in each of the first, third and fourth innings in winning the second game on April 20.

 

Manning had an RBI single in the first and the Bears got their second run on a KCC error. Hesselmann singled in both runs in the third and Kuehl had a two-run single in the fourth.

 

KCC scored three of its runs in the top of the third and added another run in the sixth.

 

Sophomore Chance Key of Waverly ran his record to 6-0 with the win. He allowed four runs on five hits, struck out nine and walked two.

 

KCC scored a run in the second, four in the fourth, four in the sixth and six in the eighth in winning the game on April 21.

 

DMACC was limited to one hit in the loss, a single by Manning in the seventh inning. The Bears scored both of their runs in the fourth when Hesselmann, freshman Kaden Frommelt of Marion and sophomore Tomas Lee of Minnetonka, Minn., each walked and Hesselmann scored on a bases-loaded walk to Ziegler. Frommelt scored the second run on an infield grounder by Kuehl.

 

DMACC used eight pitchers in the loss. Sophomore Jai Jensen of Clinton pitched the first three innings and fell to 0-2 with the loss. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out four and walked one. Sophomore Jake Porter of Winterset went a third of an inning and gave up four runs on one hit with one walk and sophomore Jacob Sjuts of Humphrey, Neb., threw an inning and two-thirds and surrendered two hits. Sophomore Thomas Leiden of Omaha, Neb., also pitched an inning and two-thirds and allowed four runs on four hits with one strikeout and two walks. Freshman Bobby Uthe of Ames gave up two runs and walked the only two batters he faced and sophomore Zach Kain of Urbandale allowed three runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. He struck out two batters and walked one. Sophomore Jaqson Tejada of Marion closed out the game with one-third of an inning on the mound. He allowed two hits and struck out one.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in a single game today at the DMACC baseball diamond. The Tritons, ranked seventh in NJCAA Division II, are 36-9 overall and 14-9 in the ICCAC. They split a two-game series with DMACC March 19 at Fort Dodge, losing the opener, 11-9, in 10 innings and winning the second game, 5-3.
