DMACC baseball team splits doubleheader against SECC
  • Sophomores Dillon Kuehl and Camden Kaufman have two hits apiece in 5-2 win in the opener

The DMACC baseball team saw its record move to 14-12 overall and 2-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after dividing a doubleheader against Southeastern Community College (SECC) March 28 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

The Bears won the opener, 5-2, behind two hits apiece from sophomores Dillon Kuehl of Urbandale and Camden Kaufman of Waukee. Kaufman's solo home run accounted for DMACC's only run in a 10-1 loss in the second game.

 

The Bears scored two runs in the first, two in the third and one in the fourth in winning the opener. SECC tallied its two runs in the top of the fifth.

 

Sophomore Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale gave DMACC a 1-0 lead when he reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on fly ball by sophomore Cael Boever of Sioux City and scored on Kuehl's single up the middle. Kuehl brought the second run home on Kaufman's double to left field.

 

Kuehl opened the DMACC third with a base on balls and was eventually thrown out at home plate following Kaufman's second double of the game. Kaufman, who advanced to third on the throw home, then scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Cory Bantam of Woodbine. Sophomore Kannon Coakley of Maquoketa, who reached on a base on balls before Bantam flew out, moved to second on a walk to freshman Kaden Frommelt of Marion and scored on a base hit by freshman Sam Hesselmann of Johnston.

 

Ziegler tallied his second run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when he reached on an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Boever's infield grounder.

 

Kuehl and Kaufman paced DMACC with two hits apiece.

 

Freshman Carter Woollums of Johnston leveled his record at 1-1 with the win. He went all seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

 

SECC, 19-8 overall and 3-3 in the ICCAC, took the second game behind a three-run first inning, single runs in the third and fourth innings, four runs in the fifth and one in the seventh.

 

DMACC got its lone run on a home run by Kaufman in the bottom of the fourth. Hesselman single twice to account for two of DMACC's six hits and Coakley had a double.

 

The loss went to sophomore Jackson Horras of Pekin in his first decision of the season. He pitched four and a third innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Vinny Mauro of Norwalk went two-thirds of an inning and gave up two runs on four hits. Sophomore Thomas Leiden of Omaha, Neb., went an inning and a third, allowing one run with two strikeouts and three walks and freshman Bobby Uthe of Ames walked one batter in two-thirds of an inning. Sophomores Jaqson Tejada of Marion and Zach Kain of Urbandale each threw one inning. Tejada allowed two hits and struck out two batters and Zain recorded a pair of strikeouts.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play a three-game series against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) today and March 30 at the DMACC baseball diamond. The two teams will play a doubleheader today and a single game on March 30. NIACC is 10-17 overall and 2-5 in the ICCAC.
