DMACC baseball sweeps doubleheader from Dakota County

 

Sophomore Camden Kaufman of Waukee had the kind of day most players can only dream about as the DMACC baseball team swept a doubleheader from Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) March 11 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

Kaufman homered and doubled and drove in three runs as the Bears took the first game 13-3 in five innings. He belted a pair of home runs, added a double and a triple and drove in five runs in a 13-9 win in the second game.

 

For the day, Kaufman was 7-for-7 at the plate with two doubles, a triple, three home runs and eight RBIs as DMACC improved to 12-8 for the season.

 

Sophomore Cory Bantam of Woodbine wasn't far behind Kaufman. He was 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs in the first game and went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run and four RBIs in the second game. Bantam finished the day with four hits in five plate appearances, including a double and two home runs and he drove in five runs.

 

DMACC coasted in the opener, opening up a 5-2 lead after three innings and all but putting the game out of reach with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Bears led 12-3 before ending the game via the mercy rule with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

 

Sophomore Dillon Kuehl of Urbandale helped the DMACC cause with a pair of hits, including a double, and an RBI and freshman Jackson Manning of Keosauqua belted a solo home run. Sophomore Cael Boever of Sioux City also doubled and drove in a run.

 

Sophomore Chance Key of Waverly pitched all five innings and improved to 2-0 with the win. He allowed three runs on four hits, struck out eight and walked one.

 

DMACC took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game and added a run in the fourth, four in the fifth and five in the sixth to open up a 13-4 lead. DCTC made it somewhat close with five runs in the top of the seventh.

 

Extra base hits included a double by sophomore Maddox Johnston of Chanhassen, Minn., and Boever, Johnston and sophomore Kannon Coakley of Maquoketa drove in one run apiece.

 

Freshman Carter Woollums of Johnston pitched the first four innings for the Bears, allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Freshman Brennan Haman of West Fargo, N.D., went two innings and improved to 2-0 with the win. He allowed three runs on four hits, struck out four and walked two. Sophomore Vinny Mauro of Norwalk went a third of an inning, allowing two runs on one hit with one strikeout and one walk and sophomore Kaleb Gengler of Sioux City gave up two walks in two-thirds of an inning.

 

The DMACC baseball team is idle until March 20 when the Bears will travel to Council Bluffs to face Iowa Western Community College (IWCC). The Reivers area 14-4 and are ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I poll
