DMACC baseball takes three of four games from BCCC
  • DMACC takes two games on March 1, 7-5 and 10-9
  • Bears win opener on March 2, 15-7, and lose nightcap, 6-5
  • DMACC will open the home season March 9 against DCTC

 

The DMACC baseball team improved to 9-7 for the season after taking three of four games against Butler County Community College (BCCC) March 1 and 2 at El Dorado, Kan.

 

The Bears won both games on March 1, 7-5 and 10-9 and won the first game on March 2, 15-7. BCCC prevented a sweep with a 6-5 win in the second game.

 

Sophomores Cael Boever of Sioux City and Camden Kaufman of Waukee had two hits apiece and sophomore Dillion Kuehl of Urbandale and freshman Kaden Frommelt of Marion belted home runs in DMACC's win in the opener of March 1. DMACC scored a run in the second for a 1-0 lead and scored again in the fourth to gain a 2-2 tie. BCCC broke the tie with a run in the bottom of the fourth before the Bears took control with five runs in the top of the fifth. BCCC made it a 7-5 game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Kaufman joined Kuehl and Frommelt with extra-base hits with a double and Kuehl and Frommelt topped DMACC in runs batted in with two apiece.

 

Sophomore Ty Madison of Omaha, Neb., improved to 3-1 with the win. He threw four innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Sophomore Jake Porter of Winterset threw an inning and two-thirds, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks and freshman Brennan Haman of West Fargo, N.D., earned his second save of the season in an inning and a third on the mound. He surrendered two hits, struck out four and walked one.

 

Boever had four hits, including a double, and drove in two runs in DMACC's 10-9 win in the second game. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-1 after scoring twice in the third. Both teams scored two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth and BCCC made it a 10-9 game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

 

Kuehl, Kaufman and sophomore Tomas Lee of Minnetonka, Minn., had two hits apiece and Kaufman drove in three runs. Extra base hits in addition to Boever's double included two doubles by Kaufman and one double each by Lee, Kuehl and sophomores Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale, Noah Thein of Dewitt and Cory Bantam of Woodbine.

 

Sophomore J.C. Dermody of Council Bluffs leveled his record at 1-1 with the win. He pitched five innings, allowing three runs on two hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Sophomore Max Martin of Franklin, Wis., threw a third of an inning, allowing two runs on one hit with one strikeout and one walk. Sophomore Jackson Horras of Pekin allowed two runs on two hits and walked two batters but was not credited with any innings pitched and sophomore Jaqson Tejada of Marion walked one batter and also was not credited with any innings pitched. Freshman Bobby Uthe of Ames worked an inning and a third and allowed two runs on three hits and sophomore Kaleb Gengler of Sioux City earned the save with a third of an inning on the mound. He struck out one batter and walked two.

 

Bantam and freshman Colin Driscoll of Waukee had three hits and three RBIs apiece in DMACC's win in the opener on March 2. Kaufman came away with two hits and four RBIs and freshman Sam Hesselmann of Johnston had two hits and drove in two runs. Ziegler also had two hits in the win.

 

Extra base hits included doubles by Ziegler, Lee, Boever, Kaufman and Bantam.

 

DMACC trailed 2-1 after two innings but opened up a 15-5 lead with six runs in the third, two in the fourth and six in the fifth. In addition to one run each in the second and third innings, BCCC tallied three runs in the third and one each in the fifth and sixth innings.

 

Sophomore Chance Key of Waverly threw the first three innings for DMACC, allowing five runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore Vinny Mauro of Norwalk went two and two-thirds innings and improved to 2-0 with the win. He allowed one run on one hit, struck out three and walked three. Sophomore Thomas King of West Des Moines worked an inning and a third, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout.

 

DMACC scored one run in each of the first five innings and BCCC scored twice in the first, once in the third and three times in the sixth in winning the final game of the series.

 

Kuehl, Bantam and freshman Jackson Manning of Keosauqua had two hits apiece, including a solo run by Kuehl, and Manning drove in a pair of runs. Bantam and Boever each doubled.

 

Freshman Carter Woollums of Johnston started the game and pitched four and two-thirds innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out three. Sophomore Zach Kain of Urbandale fell to 0-2 with the loss. He allowed two runs on one hits and walked one batter. Freshman Konner Entz of West Fargo, N.D., went an inning and a third and struck out one batter.

 

The DMACC baseball team will open the home season with doubleheaders against Dakota Community and Technical College (DCTC) March 9 and 10 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
