Kaufman grand slam gives DMACC baseball team a 10-6 win over Cloud County

Sophomore Camden Kaufman of Waukee blasted a grand-slam home run in the top of the tenth inning to lift the DMACC baseball team to a 10-6 win over Cloud County Community College (CCCC) February 2 at Concordia, Kan.

 

Freshman Colin Driscoll of Waukee began the DMACC tenth with a double and sophomore Cael Boever of Sioux City reached base after he was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and sophomore Dillon Kuehl of Urbandale set the state for Kaufman with a base on balls.

 

Sophomore Kaleb Gengler of Sioux City kept the T-Birds off the scoreboard in the bottom of the tenth to preserve the victory and record his first win of the season. Gengler relieved freshman Bobby Uthe of Ames with one out in the bottom of the ninth and gave up one hit, struck out two batters and walked one over an inning and two-thirds.

 

DMACC opened up a 4-1 lead with a run in the first inning and three runs in the third. CCCC scored runs in the first and third innings and drew even at 4-4 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Bears took a 6-4 lead with runs in the sixth and eighth innings and CCCC sent the game into extra innings at 6-6 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.

 

The Bears took two of three games against CCCC in a three-game series to return home at 2-1.

 

Kaufman and Boever paced DMACC's 14-hit attack with four hits apiece including a double by Kaufman to go with his home run and sophomore Tomas Lee of Minnetonka, Minn., had two hits, including a double. Kaufman was the only DMACC hitter with multiple runs batted in, driving in six.

 

The Bears used eight pitchers in the game including Gengler. Sophomore Chance Lee of Waverly started and went one inning, allowing one run on one hit and walking one batter. Freshman Carter Woollums of Johnston went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts and freshman Kooner Entz of West Fargo, N.D., allowed one hit, struck out one and walked one in one inning on the mound. Freshman Jaqson Tejada of Marion went one inning and struck out one batter and sophomore Vinny Mauro of Norwalk allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one batter over two-thirds of an inning. Sophomore Thomas Leiden of Omaha, Neb., threw a third of an inning, allowing one hit, striking out one batter and walking one and Uthe surrendered two hits over a third of an inning.

 

The DMACC baseball team is idle until Feb. 16 to 18 when the Bears will travel to Gainesville, Texas, and Mesquite, Texas for five games. DMACC will play North Central Texas College (NCTC) and Kansas City (Kan.) Community College (KCKCC) on Feb. 16 at Gainesville, Texas, and will meet Dallas County Eastfield for games Feb. 17 and 18 at Mesquite, Texas.
