DMACC baseball team powers past Southeastern, 20-10

 

 

 

The DMACC baseball team used eight home runs, two doubles and a triple to come away with a 20-10 win over Southeastern Community College (SECC) April 12 at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

Freshman Kannon Coakley of Maquoketa hit three home runs, freshmen Mitchell Cummins of Chanhassen, Minn., and Dillon Kuehl of Urbandale each homered twice and sophomore Reed Stallman of Alburnett added a round-trippers for the Bears.

 

DMACC, which scored in every inning, led 2-0 after scoring single runs in the first and second innings, but SECC put together a seven-run rally in the top of the third for a 7-2 lead. The Bears got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning and added a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 7-5 game. SECC took an 8-5 lead with a run in the top of the fifth but DMACC rallied for six runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good at 11-8. The Bears closed out the win with three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and four in the bottom of the eighth when the game was called because of the mercy rule. SECC scored its final two runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

 

Coakley led DMACC's 17-hit attack with four hits, including a triple to go with his home runs, and Kuehl had three hits, including a double in addition to his home runs. Stallman was one of five Bears to collect two hits in the game and he had a double to go with his home run. Cummins, sophomore Brodie Kresser of Jesup and freshmen Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale and Camden Kaufman of Waukee also had two hits apiece.

 

Stallman and Coakley topped DMACC in runs batted in with four apiece and Cummins and Kuehl each drove in three runs.

 

Freshman Ty Madison of Omaha, Neb., pitched the first two and two-thirds innings for the Bears, allowing seven runs on seven hits. He struck out two and walked one. Freshman Jai Jensen of Clinton went an inning and a third, allowing one hit and striking out one batter and freshman Chance Key of Waverly threw three innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out four and walking three. He got the win to improve to 2-1 for the season. Freshman Zach Hoehn of Waseca, Minn., pitched the final inning and walked one batter.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in a three-game series April 14 and 15 at Fort Dodge. ICCC is ranked 10th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The Tritons are 30-6 overall and 11-5 in the ICCAC.
