NIACC tops DMACC baseball team to sweep three-game series

 

North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) defeated the DMACC baseball Team 9-4 April 3 at Clarion to sweep the three-game series.

 

The Trojans, who won both games of a doubleheader on April 2, used a six-run first inning to come away with the win. They added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. DMACC scored one run in the first, one in the second and two in the fifth.

 

The loss dropped the Bears to 15-14 overall and 4-6 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Sophomore Brodie Kresser of Jesup topped DMACC's seven-hit attack with a pair of singles and a double. Sophomore Reed Stallman of Alburnett also doubled and drove in two DMACC runs and freshman Cory Bantam of Woodbine doubled. Freshmen Camden Kaufman of Waukee and Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale drove in the other two DMACC runs.

 

Freshman Vinny Mauro of Norway started on the mound for the Bears and suffered the loss, falling to 2-1 for the season. He allowed six runs on four hits, struck out two and walked four. Only one of the six runs allowed by Mauro was earned. Freshman Zach Kain of Urbandale pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing one hit, striking out one batter and walking one and freshman Jacob Sjuts of Humphrey, Neb., went a third of an inning and struck out one of the two batters he faced. DMACC also got a third of an inning from freshman Thomas Leiden of Omaha, Neb. He allowed three runs and walked one batter. Sophomore Drew Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., threw the final three and two-thirds innings, allowing four hits, striking out three and walking three.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) in a single game today at Norfolk, Neb. The Hawks are 22-8 overall and 6-3 in the ICCAC. The two teams split a doubleheader March 22 at the DMACC baseball diamond. DMACC took the opener, 4-3, and NECC won the nightcap, 12-0.
