DMACC baseball team drops doubleheader to NIACC
  • NIACC takes the opener, 5-4, and wins the nightcap, 6-4

The DMACC baseball team fell to 15-13 overall and 4-5 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after dropping both games in a doubleheader against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) April 2 at Clarion.

 

NIACC won the opener, 5-4, and took the nightcap, 6-4.

 

Freshman Mitchell Cummins of Chanhassen, Minn., had two hits and drove in a run for DMACC in the opener. The Bears had a 3-2 lead after two innings and tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the top of the fifth but NIACC scored in the bottom of the inning to come away with the win.

 

Sophomore Gage Franck of Marion and freshman Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale also drove in runs with Ziegler's lone hit being a double.

 

Sophomore Joe Husak of Cambridge pitched the first five and two-thirds innings and fell to 5-2 with the loss. He allowed five runs on eight hits, struck out eight and walked one. Freshman Eli Lehrman of Anamosa pitched a third of an inning and struck out the only batter he faced.

 

Franck, Kaufman and sophomore Brodie Kresser of Jesup had two hits apiece in DMACC's loss in the second game. The Bears took a 2-0 lead with a run in the first inning, but NIACC scored once in the bottom of the first, twice in the bottom of the second and added one run in each of the third and fourth innings. The Bears made it a 5-2 game with a run in the top of the sixth and NIACC scored in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-3 lead. DMACC closed out its scoring with a run in the top of the ninth.

 

Kresser and freshman Dillon Kuehl of Urbandale had a triple and a double respectively for the Bears and Franck drove in a run.

 

Freshman J.C. Dermody of Council Bluffs pitched the first three innings for the Bears and fell to 2-5 with the loss. He allowed five runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked three. Freshman Kaleb Gengler of Sioux City went a third of an inning and struck out one batter and walked one and freshman Ty Madison of Omaha, Neb., worked the last four and two-thirds innings. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out seven.

 

The two teams will close out the three-game series with a single game today at Clarion. NIACC is 8-17 overall and 4-4 in the ICCAC.
