  • Jake Brill drives in a run in the eighth to give DMACC the win on May 1
  • Freshman Simon Gregersen gets both DMACC wins

The DMACC baseball team ran its record to 32-18 overall and 18-11 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) by coming away with a pair of wins in a three-game series against Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) April 30 and May 1.

An RBI single by Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Tre Mungin in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Bears an 11-10 win in a single game April 30 at Centerville and freshman Jake Brill hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning as DMACC came away with a 3-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader May 1 at the DMACC baseball diamond. IHCC took the second game by a 6-5 score.

IHCC squandered a 10-3 lead after five innings in losing the April 30 game. The Bears clawed back with two runs in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and got a 10-10 with a run in the bottom of the ninth before Mungin's base hit in the 11th game them the win.

Sophomore Jake Thilges of Johnston began the DMACC 11th with a base on balls and moved to second on a base hit by freshman Cael Boever of Sioux City. Freshman Gage Franck of Marion then struck out on what should have been the third out of the inning but reached first base when the IHCC pitcher was credited with a wild pitch. That play got Thilges to third and he scored on Mungin's base hit to right field.

Thilges paced DMACC's 11-hit attack with three hits, including two home runs, and Mungin had a pair of hits and drove in three runs. Freshman Brodie Kresser of Jesup also drove in three runs for the Bears and Thilges and Brill had two RBIs apiece.

Extra base hits included home runs from Brill and Kresser and doubles by Mungin and Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jackson Fisher of Chariton.

CoFR Kaleb Krier of Altoona pitched the first inning for DMACC, giving up six runs on five hits and walking two batters. CoFR Jacob Norris of North Liberty went six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one. CoSO Cade Van Ness of Glenwood threw two innings, striking out two batters and walking two and freshman Simon Gregersen of Ramsey, Minn., went two innings, allowing one hit, striking out three and walking one. He got the win to improve to 5-2.

Freshman Mitchell Cummins of Chanhassen, Minn., began DMACC's winning rally in the opener on May 1 with a one-out base on balls. He moved to third on base hits by Franck and Mungin and scored on Brill's sacrifice fly to left field.

Both teams scored runs in the second inning and DMACC took a 2-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the third. IHCC tied it with a run in the top of the fifth.

Fisher, Franck and Mungin had two hits apiece in the win and Thilges and freshman Reed Stallman of Alburnett came away with doubles.

CoFR Jacob Draeger of Johnston worked the first six innings for the Bears, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out six and walked six. CoFR Ben Dixon of Sioux City went a third of an inning and surrendered one hit and Gregersen picked up his sixth win of the season against two losses in an inning and two-thirds on the mound. He walked two batters.

IHCC used a five-run rally in the seventh inning to take the second game on May 1. DMACC led 2-0 after one inning and 4-1 after six innings before IHCC's game-winning rally.

Thilges led DMACC's seven-hit attack with a pair of singles and drove in two runs. Mungin also had a pair of RBIs and Brill doubled for the Bears' only extra base hit.

CoSO Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter pitched the first six innings for DMACC, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out seven and walked three. Freshman Drew Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., went a third of an inning and allowed three runs on one hit. Van Ness took the loss to fall to 1-1 for the season. He allowed two runs on two hits over two-thirds of an inning.

The DMACC baseball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) in a single game May 4 at Norfolk, Neb. NECC is ranked 18th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll. The Hawks are 36-15 overall and 16-13 in the ICCAC. The two teams split a doubleheader April 27 at the DMACC baseball team with the Bears taking the opener, 2-1, in 12 innings and NECC winning the nightcap, 10-7.
