DMACC baseball team sweeps Grand View junior varsity

 

The DMACC baseball team improved to 22-12 after sweeping a doubleheader from the Grand View University junior varsity (GVUJV) April 11 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

The Bears took the opener, 14-4, and won the nightcap, 15-6.

 

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Aidan Brown of Des Moines and freshman Sam Holling of Waukesha, Wis., each homered to lead the Bears to their win in the first game. Brown also singled twice and drove in three runs and Holling came away with two RBIs.

 

DMACC never trailed after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The Bears added a run in the second, two in the third, five in the fifth and closed out the win with three runs in the bottom of the sixth when the game was called because of the mercy rule.

 

CoFR Brett Berg of West Des Moines led DMACC's 13-hit attack with four hits, including a double. CoFR Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., had two hits as did CoFR Sam Shopbell of Prior Lake, Minn. Berg and Mungin joined Holling with two RBIs apiece.

 

Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Cole Kaufman of Waukee pitched two hitless innings and improved to 1-0 with the win. He struck out one and walked one. CoSO Blake Grevengoed of West Des Moines allowed two runs on one hit and walked three but was not credited with any innings pitched and freshman Luke Fordyce of Waterloo went five innings to earn his first save of the season. He allowed two runs on three hits, struck out two and walked four.

 

CoFR Nick Ripa of Papillion, Neb., hit a pair of doubles and drove in three runs to lead the Bears to their win in the second game. DMACC led 6-4 after the first inning and put the game away with two runs in the second, three in the fourth and four in the fifth.

 

CoFR Jayden Singleton of Des Moines and CoFR Bennett Cutsforth of Dubuque had two hits and two RBIs apiece and Brown, CoFR Sam Nicolino of Des Moines and Shopbell each drove in one run.

 

Extra base hits included doubles by Singleton, Brown and Berg and a triple by Cutsforth.

 

Freshman Cooper Smith of Johnston threw the first four innings and ran his record to 1-1 with the win. He allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out seven. CoSO Josh Ylonen of Ames pitched two innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two and freshman Zach Hoehn of Waseca, Minn., allowed one hit and struck out two in one inning on the mound.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play a doubleheader against Southwestern Community College (SWCC) today at Creston. DMACC is 8-5 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). SWCC is 4-29 overall and 1-12 in the conference.
