DMACC baseball team drops two of three games against ICCC

  • Jake Brill and Brodie Kresser homer in an 11-1 DMACC win in the second game

The DMACC baseball team slipped to 20-12 overall and 8-5 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after dropping two of three games against Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) April 9 and 10 at Fort Dodge.

 

ICCC, ranked 10th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, took the first game of a doubleheader on April 9, 10-4, and DMACC won the nightcap, 11-1. ICCC closed out the series with a 17-7 win in an 8-inning game on April 10.

 

ICCC used a six-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to win the opener on April 9. The rally gave the Tritons a 7-2 lead and they closed out the win with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. DMACC tallied two runs in the fourth and two in the seventh.

 

The Bears had just six hits in the game, including two doubles by Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Jake Thilges of Johnston and one each from freshmen Brodie Kresser of Jesup and Cael Boever of Sioux City. Thilges drove in two DMACC runs and Kresser and Boever had one RBI apiece.

 

The Bears used six pitchers in the loss.  CoFR Kaleb Krier of Altoona started and went just a third of an inning. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out one and walked one. CoFR Jacob Norris of North Liberty went three innings and fell to 0-2 with the loss. He allowed three runs on one hit, struck out four and walked one. Freshman Drew Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., went a third of an inning and gave up three runs on two hits. He struck out one and walked three. CoFR Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., lasted two-thirds of an inning, allowing two unearned runs and walking one batter and freshman Brady Latcham of Pekin gave up one run on three hits and walked one batter in an inning and a third. Freshman Thomas King of West Des Moines went a third of an inning and struck out the only batter he faced.

 

Kresser and sophomore Jake Brill of Maple, Wis., belted home runs to lead DMACC to its win in the second game. Freshman Redd Stallman of Alburnett and Covid-sophomore (CoSO) Jack Luster of Huxley hit two doubles apiece and Thilges, Kresser and Boever had one apiece as the Bears put the win away behind a five-run rally in the seventh and three runs in the eighth. Both teams scored a run in the third and DMACC added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.

 

Stallman, Thilges, Luster, Kresser, Boever and freshman Gage Franck of Marion had two hits apiece in the win and Thilges, Luster, Kresser and Boever drove in two runs apiece.

 

CoFR Jacob Draeger of Johnston pitched the first five and a third innings and improved to 1-1 with the win. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out four and walked seven. Freshman Simon Gregersen of Ramsey, Minn., record his sixth save of the season behind two and two-thirds innings on the mound. He allowed two hits, struck out six and walked one.

 

ICCC used five-run rallies in the second and sixth innings to come away with the win in eight innings on April 10. The Tritons led 7-1 after two innings, 10-6 after five innings and 15-7 after six innings. They scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to end the game because of the mercy rule.

 

Thilges led DMACC with three hits, including a double, and Brill and Stallman had two hits apiece, including a home run by Brill. Stallman drove in three runs and CoFR Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., doubled and drove in two runs.

 

CoFR Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter started on the mound for the Bears and fell to 4-2 with the loss. He allowed seven runs on five hits and walked three batters. CoFR Ben Dixon of Sioux City struck out one batter and walked one in two and a third innings and CoFR Jarrett Novak of Omaha, Neb., allowed three runs on one hit, struck out one and walked two in one inning on the mound. CoSO Cade Van Ness of Glenwood allowed two unearned runs and walked two batters in a third of an inning and King allowed five runs on four hits, struck out two and walked three in two and a third innings.
