DMACC baseball team tops Iowa Western and Southwestern

The DMACC baseball team improved to 12-7 for the season with wins against Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) and Southwestern Community College (SWCC) March 20 at Council Bluffs.

The Bears overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat IWCC 3-2 and used an eight-run rally in the bottom of the eighth to top SWCC, 14-4. The game was called because of the mercy rule after DMACC scored its eighth run of the inning.

DMACC trailed IWCC 2-0 after the second inning but made it a 2-1 game with a run in the third when freshman Brodie Kresser of Jesup was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Kresser started DMACC's two-run rally in the sixth with a base hit and moved to second when freshman Reed Stallman of Alburnett drew a base on balls. After Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jackson Fisher of Chariton struck out, CoSO Jake Luster of Huxley doubled to score Kresser. Stallman later scored on an IWCC error.

DMACC had just three hits in the win, getting a double and a single from Luster and a single from Kresser.

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Jacob Draeger of Johnston started for DMACC and worked the first three innings, allowing two runs on one hit. He struck out three and walked one. Freshman Dale Stout of Waukee picked up two strikeouts in an inning on the mound and CoFR Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., allowed two hits and struck out one over two innings. CoFR Jacob Norris of North Liberty went an inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter and CoFR Simon Gregersen of Ramsey, Minn., went two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

Freshman Cael Boever of Sioux City had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs in the Bears' win over SWCC. CoFR Donovan Weaver of Davenport also had a pair of hits and Kresser, freshman Mitchell Cummins of Chanhassen, Minn., freshman Cy Patterson of Council Bluffs, CoFR Brett Berg of West Des Moines, freshman Sergio Lira Ayala of Nappannee, Ind., and CoFR Sam Nicolino of Des Moines drove in one run apiece.

DMACC led 4-1 after three innings and 6-3 after six innings, SWCC made it a 6-4 game with a run in the top of the seventh before DMACC put the game away with its eight-run rally in the eighth.

The Bears used six pitchers in the game. CoFR Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter went the first three innings and improved to 3-0 with the win. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out one batter. CoSO Cade Van Ness of Glenwood pitched one inning of hitless ball and CoFR Ben Dixon of Sioux City allowed one run on one hit and struck out one batter in an inning on the mound. CoFR Jarrett Novak of Omaha, Neb., also went one inning, allowing one run on two hits and striking out one and CoSO Blake Grevengoed of West Des Moines allowed one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout in an inning. CoSO Bret Price of Boone threw the final inning and allowed one hit.
