DMACC Baseball Team Drops Doubleheader to Iowa Western

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end March 21 when the Bears dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) at Council Bluffs.

 

The Reivers, ranked 16th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I poll, won by scores of 11-0 and 7-5.

 

DMACC, member of NJCAA Division II, fell to 9-8 for the season.

 

Sophomore Jeremy Lovera of Allentown, Penn., and freshman Calen Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., each singled to account for DMACC's only hits in the first game. The Bears fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and IWCC made it a five-inning game with four runs in the second and five in the third.

 

Sophomore John Werner of Burlington saw his record level out at 1-1 with the loss. Werner pitched two innings, allowing six runs on six hits with one strikeout and two walks. Freshman Nate Holliday of Muscatine allowed three runs on one hit and walked two batters but was not credited with any innings pitched. Sophomore Luke Longmuir of Cottage Grove allowed two runs on two hits and walked one batter while pitching one inning and freshman Carlos Eusebio of Coral Springs, Fla., allowed one hit, struck out one batter and walked one in one inning on the mound.

 

Sophomore Matt Krambeck of Omaha, Neb., and freshman Austin Murr of Denmark Township, Minn., had three this apiece for DMACC in the second game. Krambeck, who doubled, drove in two runs and Murr, freshman Denver Blinn of West Fargo, N.D., and sophomore Austin Weiler of Olathe, Kan., drove in one run apiece.

 

DMACC led 4-2 after four innings, but IWCC gained a tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. DMACC went ahead 5-4 with a run in the sixth and IWCC came away with the win after scoring three times in the bottom of the inning.

 

Freshman Spencer Hanson of West Des Moines worked the first two innings for the Bears, allowing two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. Freshman Henry Ristvedt of Savage, Minn., struck out one batter and walked two in two innings on the mound and sophomore Alex Holcomb of Owatonna, Minn., gave up two runs on three hits and walked one batter in one inning. Freshman Sam Lasko of Duluth, Minn., fell to 0-1 with the loss. He worked a third of an inning, allowing three runs on two hits and freshman Jakob Richardson of Cave Creek, Ariz., struck out two batters in two-thirds of an inning.

 

The DMACC baseball team opens Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play March 25 and 26 when the Bears host Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in a pair of doubleheaders. The first game will begin at 1 p.m. each day at the DMACC baseball diamond. KCC is 16-3 on the season and brings a seven-game winning streak into the series.
