The 2022-23 athletic year will be Eric Ver Helst’s 23rd year in the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) athletic department.  Ver Helst is the Sports Information Director for the nationally recognized DMACC Bears. During Ver Helst’s tenure at DMACC, he has provided coverage for 26 conference champions, 30 regional champions and 71 All-Americans. Along with his SID duties, Ver Helst is the Voice of the DMACC Bears, runs the scores bench on game days, and is also head statistician. He is also an active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)

 

Ver Helst is a 2000 graduate of Boone High School in Boone, IA. After high school, he received his Associate’s Degree from DMACC.

 

Ver Helst also provides his time at his alma mater where he announces and/or does stats for football, baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball. He has also announced at various places. From 2013-2016 he announced at the Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament games at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, including seven state championship games. He has also announced games at Principal Park, the Knapp Center on the campus of Drake University, and Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium.

 

Along with duties at DMACC, Ver Helst works various events for the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) where he has overseen the press box responsibilities at the Division II Region XI Baseball tournament, among other ICCAC events. During the summer of 2020, Ver Helst was hired by the Iowa High School Athletic Association to be the head staticticion for the High School Baseball State Tournametnt.

 

Ver Helst also works in the United Community School district as the assistant technology director.

 

Ver Helst resides in Boone. During his free time, he enjoys photography, announcing, listening to music, and is also an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Vikings and Iowa State Cyclones.
