DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from Iowa Central

The DMACC softball team ran its record to 39-9 overall and 22-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after sweeping a doubleheader from Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) April 27 at the DMACC softball diamond.

The Bears, ranked ninth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA),  won by identical scores of 4-3 in both games. Sophomore Kelsey Palmer of Cedar Rapids had three hits and scored two runs in the Bears' win in the opener and sophomore Elle Nelson of Grimes and freshman Mia Trewin of Waukee homered for DMACC in the nightcap. Sophomores Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., and Kinsley Robertson of Tiffin pitched the Bears to the wins.

DMACC scored two runs in each of the third and fourth innings in winning the first game.

Nelson got the Bears a 1-0 lead when she led off the third inning with a home run over the center field fence and freshman Josie McCuddin of Truro hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it a 2-0 game. McCuddin's fly ball scored Palmer, who followed Nelson's home run with a single and advanced to third on a single by freshman Hilary Wilson of Solon.

Nelson started DMACC's two-run rally in the fourth with a two-out single and came around to score on a base hit by Palmer. Wilson followed with a triple to right field, scoring Palmer.

Donahue pitched all seven innings and ran her record to 20-3 on a two-hitter. She struck out 13 batters and walked one. ICCC got both of its hits in the sixth when the Tritons scored all three of their runs.

As in the first game, Nelson staked the Bears to a 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first in the second game. DMACC made it a 4-1 game in the bottom of the fourth when Trewin belted a three-run homer. Sophomore Campbell Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., led off the inning with a base on balls and moved to third on a one-out double by freshman Kyleia Salyars of Muscatine. After sophomore Hannah Ironside of Swisher popped out, Trewin homered over the center field fence.

ICCC, which scored its first run in the second, made it a close game with one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

Robertson pitched the first four innings and improved to 12-3 with the win. She allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out five batters. Freshman Macy Blomgren of Waukee threw the last three innings and allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts. She earned her second save of the season.

The DMACC softball team will close out the regular season with a doubleheader against Hawkeye Community College (HCC) today at the DMACC softball diamond. HCC is 7-35 overall and 3-23 in the ICCAC. The Red Tails' losses include 13-0 and 15-2 setbacks to DMACC March 29 at Hudson.
