B.J. McGinn enters his eighth year as the Director of Athletics for Des Moines Area Community College.  McGinn came to DMACC in 2006 as an assistant men’s basketball coach for hall of fame Coach Orv Salmon.  In the summer of 2009, McGinn was elevated to head men’s basketball coach as Salmon assumed full-time Director of Athletics duties.

Over a nine-year span, McGinn’s basketball teams posted an overall record of 191-95 for a .670 winning percentage.  His teams earned national rankings of #1 and #2 during this time, won two Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Championships, 2 Region 11 championships, and advanced to the Elite 8 and the Final 4 of the NJCAA national tournament.  McGinn was named District 8 Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015.  During McGinn’s tenure as head coach DMACC produced three All-Americans, 32 all-region performers, and 16 NCAA Division 1 players.  The Bears were also 44-44 for a 100% graduation and placement rate over his last eight seasons, with each student athlete moving on to a four-year college or university.  In addition, the DMACC Bears were named the 2011-2012 NJCAA National Academic Team of the Year for men’s basketball with an overall 3.21 team G.P.A., and consistently had a team G.P.A. of 3.0 or above.  In 2015, McGinn was named one of the top 25 National Junior College Head Coaches in the Country by Coachstat.com.

McGinn took over as the Director of Athletics in the summer of 2016.  Since this time, DMACC has implemented a new web site through Presto Sports-www.dmaccbears.com, re-surfaced the competition gymnasium floor, remodeled the varsity women’s locker room, held the first ever Fall DMACC Athletics Banquet which featured Coach Bob Knight, and added the sport of men’s cross country.  DMACC also hired a full-time athletic trainer in order provide first-class on-site care for all of its student athletes in 2022.

In 2021, DMACC completed the Fareway Fieldhouse.  This $7 million facility provides indoor hitting for baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s golf, provides auxiliary practice courts for basketball and volleyball, houses a varsity weight room, as well as a sports medicine lab.  With the addition of this facility, DMACC Athletics has also launched the DMACC Sports Academy @ The Fareway Fieldhouse.  DMACC offers over 30+ sports camps throughout each year providing opportunities for youth to not only participate in sports camps, but also be able to visit the DMACC Boone Campus.

McGinn was named the 2021 National Junior College Athletic Director of the year.  During this season, the DMACC Men’s Basketball won the National Championship, Softball finished fifth at the NJCAA World Series, Men’s Golf finished sevent at the NJCAA Golf tournament, and Women’s Golf finished 16th at the NJCAA Golf Tournament.  The Fareway Fieldhouse was also completed, and exceeded its capital campaign goal.

In addition to his duties as the Director of Athletics at DMACC, McGinn is served for 7 1/2 years as the Ward 2 Councilman for the City of Boone.  He served as Mayor Pro-Tem, a member of the economic development committee, and chaired the Policy and Administration committee.  He currently serves as the President of the Boone Noon Kiwanis chapter, and is a member of the Boone Chamber Ambassadors.  In addition, he is a member of the National Basketball Coaches Association, as well as the National Collegiate Athletic Director’s Association.

McGinn is a native of Cedar Falls, IA and graduate of Cedar Falls High School.  He earned his B.A. in secondary education from The University of Northern Iowa in 2001, and his M.S.E. in athletic administration from Wayne State College in 2003.  He resides in Ames, IA with his wife Jill and their children Sadie and Carter.
