DMACC softball team takes two five-inning games from ECC

 

Freshman Hilary Wilson of Solon collected eight hits, including two doubles and three home runs and drove in nine runs to lead the DMACC softball team to a pair of lopsided wins over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) April 10 at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

The Bears took the opener, 17-3, and won the nightcap, 16-7, to improve to 27-7 overall and 10-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Both games were called after five because of the mercy rule.

 

Wilson was a perfect 8-for-8 on the day. She hit two home runs, scored four runs and drove in three runs in the first game and hit two doubles and a home run, scored three runs and drove in six runs in the second game.

 

Freshmen Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf and Delaney Milanowski of Spring Green, Wis., drove in three runs apiece in the opener and freshman Josie McCuddin of Truro had three RBIs in the second game. Extra base hits in the first game included a double by Caffery, two doubles from McCuddin and a home run by Milanowski.

 

Sophomore Elle Nelson of Grimes joined Wilson with two doubles in the second game and McCuddin and freshmen Kyleia Salyars of Muscatine and Mia Walker of Fonda had one double apiece. McCuddin also homered.

 

DMACC took the opener behind an 11-run first inning that featured a three-run homer from Milanowski and a two-run double from Caffery. The Bears closed out the win with a run in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth.

 

Sophomore Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., improved to 14-2 with the win. She allowed one run on three hits and struck out 11. Freshman Ellie Flanagan of Coggon pitched one inning and gave up two runs. She struck out one batter and walked three.

 

DMACC trailed 4-0 after a half inning in the second game but rallied for six runs in the bottom of the inning and put the game away with five runs in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth. ECC tallied three runs in the top of the fifth.

 

Wilson had an RBI double in the first inning and a three-run home run in the second and McCuddin hit a three-run homer in the first.

 

Sophomore Kinsley Robertson of Tiffin pitched the first four innings and improved to 9-3 with the win. She allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out six and walked two. Sophomore Lauryn Foudree of West Des Moines went one inning and gave up three runs on three hits. She struck out two and walked one.

 

The DMACC softball team will play a doubleheader against Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) April 13 at Estherville and will face North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in a doubleheader April 14 at Mason City. ILCC is 11-21 overall and 2-10 in the ICCAC. NIACC is 20-14 overall and 9-3 in the ICCAC. DMACC defeated NIACC 9-0 and 9-1 when the two teams played April 8 at the DMACC softball diamond.
