DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheaders from Hawkeye and Iowa Central

  • Bears hit 10 home runs, a triple and nine doubles in the four wins

The DMACC softball team ran its record to 21-5 overall and 4-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) by sweeping doubleheaders against Hawkeye Community College (HCC) and Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) March 29 and 30.

 

The Bears used the mercy rule in three of the four wins, topping HCC 13-0 and 15-2 in five innings each game March 29 at Waterloo and handing ICCC a 9-0 loss in six innings of the first game on March 30 at Fort Dodge. The second game against ICCC went the regulation seven innings with DMACC prevailing by a 6-0 score.

 

The Bears outscored the two teams 43-2 in the four wins and collected a total of 20 extra-base hits. They belted seven home runs, a triple and three doubles in the wins over HCC and had three home runs and six doubles in the wins against ICCC.

 

Sophomore pitchers Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., improved to 11-1 and Kinsley Robertson of Tiffin is 6-2 after both came away with two wins apiece. Donahue's win was her ninth in a row.

 

DMACC scored a run in the first, seven in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth in beating HCC in the opener on March 29. Freshmen Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf, Hilary Wilson of Solon and Delaney Milanowski of Spring Green, Wis., and sophomore Ceara Swanson of Lincoln, Neb., hit home runs in the win and Caffery and freshman Mia Walker of Fonda had a double and a triple respectively.

 

Milanowski led DMACC in runs batted in with three, all on a home run during the seven-run third inning. Wilson had two RBIs, both on a home run in the third and sophomores Ella Nelson of Grimes and Campbell Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., had two RBIs apiece.

 

Donahue and freshman Macy Blomgren of Waukee combined on a no-hitter. Donahue went four innings and struck out 11 and Blomgren threw one inning and struck out two.

 

The second game featured more multiple run-scoring innings as the Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first and added to their advantage with five runs in the second, three in the third and six in the fourth. HCC tallied its two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

 

Walker and sophomore Bella Nelson of Gilbert paced DMACC at the plate with three hits apiece and Caffery had a pair of singles. Wilson drove in four runs with a sacrifice fly, a two-run home run and a single. Walker and freshman Josie McCuddin of Truro hit solo home runs in the fourth inning.

 

Robertson pitched four hitless innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Ellie Flanagan of Coggon went two innings and allowed two runs on one hit. She struck out three and walked two.

 

DMACC scored two runs in the first, three in the third, one in the fifth and three in the sixth in beating ICCC in the opener on March 30. The Bears collected 12 hits including three from Elle Nelson and two each by Milanowski, McCuddin and Swanson. McCuddin hit a solo home run in the fourth and Elle Nelson added a solo home run in the fifth. Elle Nelson, Kelley and Swanson had two RBIs apiece.

 

Donahue went all six innings. She allowed three hits, struck out 11 and walked one.

 

DMACC scored two runs in the first, two in the sixth and two in the seventh in winning the second game. Wilson had three hits and Caffery, sophomore Kelsey Palmer of Cedar Rapids, Kelley and Milanowski had two hits apiece.

 

Wilson topped the Bears in RBIs with two, getting an RBI double in the first and a run-scoring single in the seventh. Milanowski hit a solo home run in the sixth.

 

Robertson pitched the first four innings, allowing three hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Blomgren pitched three hitless innings and struck out six.

 

The DMACC softball team, ranked ninth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), faces Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) April 3 at Norfolk, Neb. NECC is 3-16 overall and 0-4 in the ICCAC.
