DMACC softball team takes doubleheader from Allen

Sophomore Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., allowed two hits and struck out 18 to lead the DMACC softball team to a 5-0 win over Allen County Community College (ACCC) in the first game of a doubleheader March 15 at Iola, Kan.

 

Freshman Kyleia Salyars of Muscatine drove in three runs and sophomore Campbell Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., and freshman Josie McCuddin of Truro had two RBIs apiece in the Bears' 10-9 win in the second game.

 

The Bears, ranked 12th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, improved to 12-4 for the season with their seventh consecutive win.

 

Donahue improved to 6-1 with the win in the opener. She pitched all seven innings and walked just two batters in addition to the two hits she allowed and the 18 strikeouts she recorded.

 

DMACC got the win behind single runs in the first, third and four innings and two runs in the fifth. Freshman Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf paced the Bears offensively with three hits, including a double, and one RBI. Sophomores Elle Nelson of Grimes and Bella Nelson of Gilbert had two hits apiece including a home run by Bella Nelson. Each drove in two runs.

Caffery had three hits and Ella Nelson, Kelley and freshman Delaney Milanowski of Spring Green, Wis., had two apiece in DMACC's win in the second game. Ella Nelson, Salyars and Kelley hit doubles and Salyars drove in three runs with Kelley and McCuddin getting two RBIs apiece.

 

DMACC did all of its scoring in the first four innings, leading 3-2 after the first inning, 7-4 after the second inning, 8-4 after the third inning and 10-4 after the fourth inning. ACCC made it close with two runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

 

Sophomore Kinsley Robertson of Tiffin started in the circle for the Bears and went just one inning, allowing four runs on five hits with one strikeout. Sophomore Lauryn Foudree of West Des Moines went four and two-thirds innings and improved to 2-1 with the win. She allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked three. Freshman Ella Flanagan of Coggon earned her first save of the season with an inning and a third in the circle. She surrendered one run, struck out one batter and walked one.

 

DMACC's Kansas trip continues today with a doubleheader against Neosho County Community College (NCCC) at Chanute, Kan.
