DMACC softball team wins North Plains District B title; qualifies for national championship

The DMACC softball team claimed the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) North Plains District B championship with a doubleheader sweep of Miles Community College (MCC) May 13 at the DMACC softball diamond. DMACC improved to 49-12 with its 13th and 14th consecutive victories.

With the win, the Bears, ranked sixth in the NJCAA Division II poll, have qualified for the NJCAA Division II Softball Championship May 25 to 29 in Oxford, Ala.

The best 2-of-3 tournament was originally scheduled for May 14 and 15 but was moved to the 13th and 14th because rain is in the forecast for the 14th and 15th.

Freshman Sami Miller of Mason City belted a pair of home runs and drove in all four DMACC runs as the Bears took the first game, 4-2. Freshmen Sophie Maras of Johnston, Haley Forret of Van Meter and Kaylie Reynolds of Muscatine hit home runs and freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa tossed a one-hitter to lead DMACC to an 11-0 win in the second game.

Miller paced DMACC's seven-hit attack in the opener with a single to go with her two home runs. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Miller's first home run but fell behind 2-1 after MCC scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings. DMACC answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth when Miller hit a three-run home run.

Freshmen Abby Husak of Polk City, Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., Jada Collins of Des Moines and Zoey Wright of Ottumwa also had hits for DMACC, including doubles by Kelley and Wright.

Freshman Abby Flanagan of Coggon scattered five hits, struck out 14 and walked one to get the win.

DMACC scored in every inning to earn the win in the second game. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first, led 2-0 after two innings, 7-0 after three innings, 8-0 after four innings and 11-0 after five innings, when the game was called because of the mercy rule.

Maras, Kelley, Reynolds and Forret had two hits apiece to lead DMACC, including a double by Forret. Maras drove in three runs and Kelley and Reynolds had two RBIs apiece.

Lander faced just 16 batters and threw just 50 pitches, including 36 strikes, to get the win. She struck out three.

The DMACC softball team has qualified for the NJCAA Division II Softball Championship eight times since 2012. The Bears finished third nationally in 2013-14, 2017-18 and 2018-19. They were fourth in 2014-15.
