The DMACC softball team closed out the regular season on a positive note, sweeping a doubleheader from Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) May 5 at Norfolk, Neb.

The Bears, ranked sixth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), extended their current winning streak to eight games with a 15-0 win in the opener and a 11-2 decision in the second game to end the regular season at 45-12 overall and 35-5 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

Freshman Kaylie Reynolds of Muscatine went 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs and a double and four runs batted to lead DMACC in the opener. The Bears led 3-0 after three innings and put the game out of reach with 11 runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. The game was called because of the mercy rule after NECC batted in the bottom of the fifth.

Freshmen Sophie Maras of Johnston, Jada Collins of Des Moines and Sami Miller of Mason City had three hits apiece in the win, including home runs by Maras and Miller and a double by Collins. Maras, Miller and Collins drove in three runs apiece and freshman Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., had two RBIs.

Freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa tossed a two-hitter and struck out one to come away with the win.

DMACC led 5-2 after three innings in the second game and got the win behind two runs in the fourth and four in the sixth. Maras and Collins paced the Bears with two hits apiece, including a home run from Maras. Reynolds also homered in the game and drove in three runs.

Freshman Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt went all six innings and got the win. She allowed two runs on one hit, struck out five and walked one.

The DMACC softball team will play in the Region XI-A softball tournament May 8 to 10 at the DMACC softball diamond. The Bears will be the No. 1 seed and will face the winner of the Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC)-NECC matchup at 3 p.m. on May 8. The double-elimination tournament will continue with the championship game slated for May 9 at 2 p.m. A second championship game, if necessary, will be played at noon on May 10.

The Regin XI-A winner will play in either the North Plains A District Tournament or the North Plains B District Tournament. Tournament pairings and location will be announced when they become available.
