Bears pick up sweep of Iowa Lakes

The DMACC softball team got a four-hitter from freshman Abby Flanagan of Coggon and freshman Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt tossed a three-hitter as the Bears swept a doubleheader from Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) April 27 at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

The Bears, ranked sixth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), won by scores of 7-3 and 21-1 to improve to 41-12 overall and 31-5 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Flanagan improved to 15-4 in winning the opener. She allowed three runs on four hits, struck out 10 and walked one. Jacobson ran her record to 12-4 in winning the second game. She surrendered one run on three hits and struck out eight.

 

Freshmen Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., and Jada Collins of Des Moines paced DMACC in the opener with three and two hits respectively. Kelley drove in three runs and Collins and freshman Kaylie Reynolds of Muscatine had two RBIs apiece. Reynolds and Collins belted home runs and freshman Haley Forret of Van Meter added a double.

 

The Bears took a 4-2 lead in the first inning, made it a 5-2 game with a run in the second and closed out the win with two runs in the fifth. ILCC closed to 7-3 with a run in the top of the sixth.

 

DMACC scored 15 runs in the second and six in the third to come away with the win in the second game. Freshman Layney Loyd of New London led the Bears with three hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Freshman Abby Archer of Van Meter homered and also drove in four runs and freshman Sami Miller of Mason City homered and drove in three runs. Reynolds, Kelley and freshman Sophie Maras of Johnston had two hits apiece, including doubles by Reynolds and Kelley, and Kelley drove in three runs. Forret also doubled in the win.

 

The DMACC softball team closes out the home portion of the regular season with a doubleheader today against Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC). NECC is 10-38 overall and 4-32 in the ICCAC.
