DMACC softball team sweeps four games from IWCC
  • DMACC pounds out 42 hits, including 14 extra-base hits, in four-game series
  • Freshman Abby Flanagan of Coggon wins two of the four games
  • Freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa throws 1-hitter in an 8-0 win

 

The DMACC softball team improved to 39-12 overall and 29-5 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with a four-game sweep of Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) April 24 and 25 at Council Bluffs.

 

The Bears swept the two games on April 24, 10-6 and 8-0 and repeated the feat on April 25, winning by scores of 7-1 and 10-2.

 

Freshman Kaylie Reynolds of Muscatine had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs to lead DMACC to its 10-6 win in the opener on April 24. The Bears trailed 6-1 after four innings, but rallied with four runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and four more in the seventh to come away with the win.

 

Freshman Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., had a pair of base hits, including a double, and drove in two runs and freshman Sophie Maras of Johnston belted a solo home run. Freshman Sami Miller of Mason City contributed a pair of singles and an RBI and freshman Haley Forret of Van Meter drove in a run.

 

Freshman Abby Flanagan of Coggon went the distance for the win. She allowed six runs on 10 hits, struck out nine and walked four.

 

Freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa threw a one-hitter, struck out seven and walked one to lift the Bears to an 8-0 win in the second game. Freshman Abby Archer of Van Meter collected three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in four runs to lead DMACC at the plate. Reynolds and freshman Abby Husak of Polk City had two hits apiece, including two doubles by Reynolds, who drove in two runs.

 

DMACC took a 1-0 lead in the first and put the game away with four runs in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

 

Freshman Allie Jacobson of Humboldt allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked one as DMACC took the opener on April 25, 7-1. Both teams scored a run in the second inning and DMACC pulled away with one run in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the sixth.

 

Freshman Layney Loyd of New London led the Bears at the plate with two hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Forret and Reynolds also doubled in the win and freshman Zoey Wright of Ottumwa drove in a pair of runs.

 

Maras and Kelley had three hits apiece, including a triple and a home run from Maras and a double by Kelley, as DMACC closed out the series with a 10-2 win on April 25. The Bears led 3-1 after the first inning and added single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings and put the game out of reach with four runs in the top of the sixth. The game was called because of the mercy rule after IWCC batted in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Freshman Jada Collins of Des Moines also had three hits in the win and Miller came away with two hits and two RBIs.

 

Flanagan threw all six innings and picked up the win. She allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out six.

 

The DMACC softball team will face Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) in a doubleheader April 27 at the DMACC softball diamond. ILCC is 20-16 overall and 20-14 in the ICCAC. The two teams split a doubleheader April 20 at Estherville with DMACC taking the opener, 2-1, and ILCC winning the nightcap, 9-6.
