DMACC's Sophie Maras named ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II softball
  • Maras went 16-for-26 during the week with nine extra-base hits
  • Maras scored 15 runs and drove in 16 runs
  • Maras leads the nation in runs batted in, stolen bases and home runs and is fourth in batting average

 

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Sophie Maras the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II softball for the week of April 12 to 18.

 

This marks the fourth time Maras has been honored by the league. She also earned the honor for the week of Feb. 15 to 21, the week of Feb. 22 to 28 and the week of March 29 to April 4.

 

Maras, a freshman from Johnston, is the second member of the DMACC softball team to be honored by the conference this season. Freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa was honored for her pitching achievements the week of Feb. 15 to 21 and the week of March 29 to April 4.

 

Maras went 16-for-26 during the week as the Bears swept doubleheaders from Southwestern Community College (SWCC) and Marshalltown Community College (MCC) and took a four-game series from Ellsworth Community College (ECC), pushing their winning streak to 17 games.

 

Maras' 16 hits included five home runs, two doubles and two triples. She scored 15 runs, drove in 16 runs and stole 10 bases.

 

Maras is batting .569 with 91 hits in 160 at-bats. Her hits include 15 doubles, four triples and 24 home runs. She has scored 74 runs, driven in 74 runs and stolen 41 bases in 42 attempts. Maras leads the ICCAC in average, runs batted in, home runs and stolen bases. She also leads Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in RBIs, stolen bases and home runs and is fourth in batting.

 

The DMACC softball team, 34-11 overall and 24-4 in the ICCAC and ranked third in NJCAA Division II, plays a doubleheader against Southwestern Community College (SWCC) today at the DMACC softball diamond. SWCC is 20-25-1 overall and 13-17 in the ICCAC. DMACC swept a doubleheader from the Spartans April 14 at Creston, winning by scores of 9-5 and 10-0.
