Winning streak moves to 13 with sweep of Marshalltown

Freshman Sophie Maras of Johnston hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs to lead the DMACC softball team to an 11-1 against Marshalltown Community College (MCC) in the first game of a doubleheader April 15 at Marshalltown. The Bears took the second game, 4-2, behind Alexis Lander's four-hitter.

 

The wins extends DMACC's winning streak to 13 games and gives the Bears a 29-10 record. They are 19-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Maras was 3-for-4 in the opener, getting a single to go with her home runs, and she scored three runs. Maras continues to lead the ICCAC in hitting with a .563 average and in stolen bases with 33. She is second in home runs with 20 and second in runs batted in with 58.

 

DMACC, ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, led all the way. The Bears scored two runs in the first, one in the second, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the seventh. MCC tallied its lone run in the bottom of the seventh.

 

Freshman Abby Husak of Polk City was 4-for-5 in the game and freshmen Kaylie Reynolds of Muscatine and Haley Forret of Van Meter had two hits apiece. Freshman Sami Miller of Mason City homered and drove in two runs and freshman Zoey Wright of Ottumwa also had a pair of RBIs. Forret, Reynolds and freshman Jada Collins of Des Moines each doubled for the Bears.

 

Freshman Abby Flanagan of Coggon pitched all seven innings for DMACC and improved to 8-4 with the win. She allowed three hits and struck out six batters.

 

Freshman Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., hit a solo home run and Miller had two hits and two RBIs in DMACC's win in the second game. The Bears trailed 2-1 after the first inning, then took a 3-2 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third and closed out the win with a run in the top of the fourth.

 

Freshman Abby Archer of Van Meter joined Miller with two hits and Husak drove in one DMACC run. Reynolds hit a pair of doubles and Wright had one.

 

Freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa ran her record to 11-2 with the win. She allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four.

 

The DMACC softball team will face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in doubleheaders April 17 and 18 at the DMACC softball diamond. ECC is 12-18 this season and 9-15 in the ICCAC.
