DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from Southwestern

  • Freshman Abby Husak of Polk City leads DMACC with six hits in the doubleheader

 

Freshman Abby Husak of Polk City had six hits in seven at-bats to lead the DMACC softball team to a pair of victories against Southwestern Community College (SWCC) April 14 at Creston.

 

Husak was 3-for-4 and scored three runs as the Bears took the opener, 9-5, and went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one run batted in in a 10-0 win in the second game. The game was called because of the mercy rule after SWCC batted in the bottom of the fifth.

 

The wins extended DMACC's winning streak to 11 games. The Bears are 27-10 overall and 17-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

SWCC had a 4-0 lead after three innings in the first game but DMACC responded with three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth to come away with the win.


Freshmen Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., and Haley Forret of Van Meter had two hits apiece for the Bears, including a double by Kelley, and freshmen Sophie Maras of Johnston and Zoey Wright of Ottumwa hit home runs. Forret drove in three runs and Kelley and freshman Kaylie Reynolds of Muscatine had two RBIs apiece.

 

Freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa pitched the first three innings for DMACC, allowing four runs on five hits. She struck out two and walked two. Freshman Abby Flanagan of Coggon went four innings and came away with the win. She allowed one run on one hit and struck out four.

 

Husak, Maras and Kelley had three hits apiece and Kelley drove in five runs to lead the Bears to their win in the second game. DMACC broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the third and closed out the victory with three runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.

 

Wright had a triple in the win and Kelley and Husak collected doubles. Maras, Husak, freshman Kamrin Wells of Topeka, Kan., and freshman Sami Miller of Mason City drove in one run apiece.

 

Freshman Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt scattered five hits and struck out three to earn her seventh win of the season against four losses.

 

The DMACC softball team will play a doubleheader against Marshalltown Community College today at Marshalltown. The Tigers are 5-31 overall and 3-19 in the ICCAC. DMACC swept a doubleheader from MCC April 9 at the DMACC softball diamond, winning by scores of 4-2 and 14-0.
