DMACC's Sophie Marras named ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II softball
  • Maras is the second DMACC softball player to be honored by the ICCAC
  • Freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa has also been honored by the conference
  • Maras leads the ICCAC in batting average at .578, is tied for first in home runs and is second in runs batted in

 

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Sophie Maras the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for softball for the week of March 29 to April 4.

 

This marks the third time Maras, a freshman from Johnston, has been honored by the conference and she is the second member of the DMACC softball team to earn the honor. Maras also earned the honor for the week of Feb. 15 to 21 and the week of Feb. 22 to 28.

 

Freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa has also been named ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II softball (pitching) twice, the week of Feb. 15 to 21 and the week of March 29 to April 4.

 

Maras batted .565 for the week, collecting 13 hits in 23 at-bats as the Bears swept a doubleheader from North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) and won three of four games against Kirkwood Community College (KCC). Her hits included a double and six home runs. She drove in 16 runs and was 10-of-10 in stolen bases.

 

Maras is batting .578 with a .632 on-base percentage and a 1.118 slugging percentage. She has 59 hits in 102 at-bats, including 11 doubles, a triple and 14 home runs. She has scored 44 runs, driven in 47 runs and has 25 stolen bases.

 

Maras leads the ICCAC in batting average and in stolen bases, is tied for the lead in home runs and is second in runs batted in.

 

The DMACC softball team, 19-10 overall and 9-3 in the ICCAC, is ranked sixth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll. The Bears play a doubleheader against Marshalltown Community April 9 at the DMACC softball diamond and play doubleheaders against Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) April 10 and 11 at Fort Dodge.
