Bats explode in doubleheader sweep of NIACC

DMACC collects 14 extra-base hits, including six home runs, in lopsided second-game win

 

The DMACC softball team ran its winning streak to five games by sweeping a doubleheader from North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) March 29 at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

The Bears, who swept a doubleheader from the Trojans on March 28, made it a four-game sweep with 11-3 and 27-4 wins on March 29. The wins give DMACC a 16-9 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Freshman Sophie Maras of Johnston homered and drove in three runs and freshmen Kaylie Reynolds of Muscatine, Abby Archer of Van Meter and Abby Husak of Polk City drove in two runs apiece for DMACC in the opener. The Bears trailed 2-1 after the first inning but took a 4-2 with three runs in the bottom of the second and closed out the five-inning game with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. The game was called because of the mercy rule after NIACC batted in the top of the fifth.

 

Maras, Archer, Husak and freshman Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., paced DMACC's 13-hit attack with two hits apiece, including a double by Husak.

 

Freshman Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt pitched the first three and two-thirds innings and improved to 4-4 with the win. She allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five. Freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa threw an inning and a third, striking out two batters and walking one.

 

The Bears battered three NIACC pitchers for 26 hits, including 14 extra-base hits, in winning the second game. They trailed 4-0 after the Trojans batted in the top of the first but scored 22 runs in the bottom of the inning and closed out the win with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

 

Maras and freshman Sami Miller of Mason City led the Bears in four hits apiece, Reynolds and freshman Layney Loyd of New London had three hits apiece and Kelley and freshmen Kamrin Wells of Topeka, Kan., Haley Forret of Van Meter and Zoey Wright of Ottumwa had two hits apiece. Maras drove in six runs, Miller and Reynolds had four RBIs apiece, Loyd and Forret each drove in three runs and Wells and freshman Sara Keeler of Creston drove in two runs apiece.

 

Extra-base hits included two doubles each by Reynolds and Loyd and one double apiece from Miller and Kelley. Miller and Wright each tripled and Maras and Forret each homered twice with Reynolds and Loyd getting one home run apiece.

 

Freshman Abby Flanagan of Coggon improved to 5-3 with the win. She threw five innings, allowing four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

 

The DMACC softball team will play a doubleheader against Marshalltown Community College (MCC) March 31 at Marshalltown. The Tigers are 2-21 overall and 0-9 in the ICCAC.
