DMACC's Sophie Maras named ICCAC Athlete of the Week and NJCAA Player of the Week
  • Maras batted .667 in seven games during the week
  • Her hits included four doubles and three home runs
  • Maras scored nine runs and batted in 12 runs

 

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Sophie Maras the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II softball for the week of February 22 to 28.

 

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named Maras the NJCAA Player of the Week for Division II softball for the week of Feb. 22 to 28.

 

Maras, a freshman from Johnston, helped the DMACC softball team to a 5-2 record during the week, including five consecutive wins during an Oklahoma trip. The Bears began the week with back-to-back losses to Jones College (JC) and Hinds Community College (HCC) while winding up a trip to Mississippi. Later in the week DMACC traveled to Oklahoma and recorded wins against Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa (NOCT), Fort Scott Community College (FSCC), Northern Oklahoma College-Enid (NOCE), Clarendon College (CC) and Highland Community College (HCC).

 

Maras batted .667 in the seven games, collecting 16 hits in 24 at-bats. Her hits included four doubles and three home runs. Maras scored nine runs, drove in 12 runs and stole three bases.

 

For the season, Maras is batting .676 with a .733 on-base percentage and a 1.297 slugging percentage. She has 25 hits in 37 at-bats, including eight doubles and five home runs. Maras has scored 16 runs. She has 21 runs batted in and has stolen six bases.

 

Maras, a shortstop, has a .933 fielding percentage with 17 putouts, 19 assists and three errors in 39 chances. She has participated in three double plays.

 

The DMACC softball team, 8-3 and ranked 10th in the NJCAA Division II poll, will face Crowder Community College (CCC) in a doubleheader today at Neosho, Mo. The Bears will play a doubleheader against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEOAM) March 4 at Miami, Okla., and will wrap up the week with two games against Allen County Community College (ACCC) March 5 at Iola, Kan.
