DMACC softball team goes 5-0 on Oklahoma trip
  • Freshman Sophie Maras of Johnston goes 12-of-17 with six extra-base hits in the five games
  • Bears belt eight home runs in the five wins
  • Freshmen Alexis Lander of Onawa and Abby Flanagan of Coggon post two wins apiece

 

The DMACC softball team improved to 8-3 for the season with a 5-0 record in games February 26 and 27 at Enid, Okla.

 

The Bears, ranked 10th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), defeated Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa, Fort Scott Community College (FSCC) and Northern Oklahoma College-Enid on Feb. 27 and were victorious over Clarendon College (CC) and Highland Community College (HCC) on Feb. 27.

 

Freshman Sophie Maras of Johnson paced DMACC with a 12-of-17 performance at the plate, including six extra-base hits. She scored seven runs and drove in nine runs.

 

Maras had two hits and freshman Sami Miller of Mason City hit a home run as DMACC defeated NOCT, 9-1. Freshmen Isabella Johnson of Slater and Kaylie Reynolds of Muscatine had two hits apiece, including a double and a triple by Reynolds. She and Miller drove in two runs apiece. Freshman Jada Collins of Des Moines also had a double for the Bears.

 

NOCT led 1-0 after three innings but DMACC tied it with a run in the bottom of the fourth and then put the game out of reach with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. The game was then called because of the mercy rule.

 

Lander pitched all five innings and picked up her third win of the season against one loss. She allowed one run on two hits and struck out four batters.

 

Reynolds hit two home runs and drove in four runs in an 11-2, five-inning win over FSCC. DMACC took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the bottom of the second and scored nine runs in the bottom of the third. FSCC, which took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first, scored its second run in the top of the fourth.

 

Reynolds, Maras and freshman Kamrin Wells of Topeka, Kan., had two hits apiece, including a pair of doubles by Maras and one by Wells. Johnson also doubled for DMACC. Maras drove in three runs and freshman Haley Forret of Van Meter drove in two runs.

 

Freshman Abby Flanagan of Coggon allowed two runs on two hits and struck out 10 batters in getting the win.

 

Freshmen Abby Archer of Van Meter and Zoey of Ottumwa had three hits apiece to lead DMACC past NOCE, 10-0. The Bears scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings, added three in the sixth and four in the seventh.

 

Maras, freshman Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., and freshman Julia Merfeld of Clear Lake had two hits apiece in the win with Kelley getting a pair of doubles and freshman Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt and Merfeld collecting one apiece. Merfeld drove five runs and Maras, who homered, and Kelley had two RBIs apiece.

 

Jacobson allowed two hits, struck out nine and walked one in earning the win.

 

Maras had four hits and drove in three runs in a 12-7 win over CC. The Bears scored single runs in the first and second innings and added five in the fourth for a 7-0n lead. CC made it a 7-2 game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth but DMACC responded with four runs in the top of the sixth for a 11-2 lead. CC tallied four times in the bottom of the inning to make it a 11-6 game and went ahead 12-6 with a run in the top of the sixth. CC scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh.

 

Collins, Reynolds, Kelley and Wright had two hits apiece and Reynolds came away with three RBIs. Extra base hits included doubles by Maras, Kelley, Collins and Wells and home runs from Archer, Maras and Reynolds.

 

Flanagan pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on five hits. She struck out 10 and walked two. Jacobson went a third of an inning, allowing four runs on three hits. She struck out one and walked one.

 

Maras and Collins had two hits apiece in a 7-5 in over HCC. The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning and DMACC pulled away with three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh. HCC scored four times in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Maras and Lander each doubled in the win and Archer drove in a pair of runs.

 

Lander went five and two-thirds innings and came away with the win. She allowed five runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked three. Jacobson worked an inning and a third, striking out three and walking two

 

The DMACC softball team will play two games against Crowder Community College (CCC) on March 3 at Neosho, Mo. The Bears will face Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEOAM) in a doubleheader March 4 at Miami, Okla., on March 4 and will play a doubleheader against Allen County Community College (ACCC) March 5 at Iola, Kan.
