DMACC's Sophie Maras named ICCAC Athlete of the Week
  • Maras, from Johnston, compiles a .692 batting average
  • Maras records two home runs and nine RBIs in four games during the week of Feb. 15 to 21
  • Maras is one of DMACC's two first-time ICCAC honorees of the season

 

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Sophie Maras the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II softball for the week of February 15 to 21.

 

Maras, a freshman shortstop from Johnston, helped the Bears to a 3-3 record during a six-game trip to Mississippi Feb. 20 to 22. The DMACC softball team, ranked 10th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, played four games during the week of Feb. 15 to 21 and an additional two games on Feb. 22.

 

Maras batted .692 in the four games, collecting nine hits in 13 at-bats. Her nine hits included four doubles and two home runs, and she drove in nine runs, including five RBIs in an 11-3 win over Meridian Community College (MCC). Maras also scored seven runs.

 

Through six games, Maras is hitting .600 with 12 hits in 20 at-bats. She has an on-base percentage of .667 and a 1.250 slugging percentage. Her 12 hits include three home runs and four doubles. She has scored nine runs, has stolen two bases and has 25 total bases.

 

Maras has a .905 fielding percentage with 13 putouts, six assists and two errors in 12 total chances.

 

The DMACC softball team will travel to Enid, Okla., for games Feb. 26 and 27. The Bears will play Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa (NOCT), Fort Scott Community College (FSCC) and Northern Oklahoma College-Enid (NOCE) on Feb. 26 and will play Clarendon College (CC) and Highland Community College (HCC) on Feb. 27.
