DMACC softball team drops games to Jones College and Hinds Community College

The DMACC softball team slipped to 3-3 for the season following losses to Jones College (JC) and Hinds Community College (HCC) February 22 at Ellisville, Miss.

 

The Bears, ranked 10th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), dropped a 6-5 decision to second-ranked Jones College in the first game and then saw HCC score twice in the bottom of the eighth to take a 7-6 decision.

 

The Bears took a 3-0 lead against JC with three runs in the top of the second, but the Bobcats tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to trail 3-2. DMACC went ahead 4-2 with a run in the top of the fifth and JC responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning for a 6-4 lead. The Bobcats went ahead 7-4 with a run in the bottom of the sixth and the Bears made it a 7-6 game with two runs in the top of the seventh.

 

Freshman Sophie Maras of Johnson sparked DMACC's nine-hit attack with a home run and three RBIs. Freshmen Isabella Johnson of Slater, Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., and Jada Collins of Des Moines had two hits apiece and Johnson, freshman Kaylie Reynolds of Muscatine and freshman Layney Loyd of New London drove in one run apiece.

Freshman Alexis Lander of Onawa pitched four and a third innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. She struck out one and walked three. Freshman Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt threw an inning and two-thirds, allowing two runs on three hits. She struck out three batters.

 

HCC led DMACC 2-1 after three innings before the Bears took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. HCC tied it with a run in the bottom of the inning and then went ahead 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. DMACC sent the game into extra innings with a run in the top of the seventh and took a 5-4 lead with another run in the top of the eighth. HCC then scored twice in the bottom of the inning for the win.

 

Reynolds led DMACC with a home run and three RBIs. Freshman Sami Miller of Mason City had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Maras singled three times. Miller also drove in one run.

 

Freshman Abby Flanagan of Coggon pitched the first five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. She walked one batter. Lander went two innings, allowing a run on two hits and walking one batter and Jacobson allowed one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. She struck out two batters.

 

The DMACC softball team travels to Enid, Okla., for games Feb. 26 and 27. The Bears will face Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa (NOCT), Fort Scott Community College (FSCC) and Northern Oklahoma College-Enid (NOCE) on Feb. 26 and will play Clarendon College (CC) and Highland Community College (HCC) on Feb. 27.
