Five DMACC softball players earn NFCA all-region honors

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has named five members of the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team to the NFCA National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II All-Region Team.

 

Sophomores Mia Ruther of Burlington and Avery Guy of Cedar Rapids and Freshmen Josie Swafford of Wellston, Okla., Morgan Lewis of Cedar Rapids and Ally Pickering of Winterset were named to the Midwest Region First Team. Swafford was named as a pitcher, Ruther and Guy as infielders, Lewis as an outfielder and Pickering as a designated player.

 

Swafford led DMACC to a 52-8 season and a third-place finish in the NJCAA Division II Softball Championship with a 28-3 record and a 1.37 earned run average. She also recorded three saves on the season. Swafford 193 and two-thirds innings, allowing 47 runs, 38 earned runs, on 108 hits. She struck out 261 batters, walked 52 and averaged 9.43 strikeouts per seven innings. Swafford finished third nationally in wins and strikeouts and fourth in ERA.

 

Swafford also played a key role for DMACC offensively, hitting .440 with a .510 on-base percentage and a .712 slugging percentage.

 

She collected 55 hits in 125 at-bats, including 15 doubles, two triples and five home runs. She drove in 55 runs and scored 34 runs.

 

Swafford also had a .939 fielding percentage with 34 putouts, 12 assists and three errors from 49 total chances.

 

Ruther led the Bears in hitting with a .580 average. She also had a .616 on-base percentage and a .715 slugging percentage. Ruther, who finished second nationally in hitting, had 112 hits in 193 at-bats, including 10 doubles, five triples and two home runs. She drove in 41 runs, scored 88 runs and stole 46 bases in 48 attempts.

 

Ruther's fielding percentage was .963 on 82 putouts, 73 assists and six errors in 161 total chances. She participated in a pair of double plays.

 

 

Guy batted .458 for the Bears this past season with a .500 on-base percentage and a .705 slugging percentage. She had 87 hits in 190 at-bats, including 14 doubles, six triples and seven home runs. She drove in 62 runs and scored 68 runs.

 

Guy finished the season with a .899 fielding percentage on 78 putouts, 109 assists and 21 errors in 208 total chances. She participated in six double plays.

 

Lewis compiled a .444 batting average to go with a .492 on-base percentage and a .567 slugging percentage. She had 80 hits in 180 at-bats and her hits included 16 doubles and three triples. Lewis drove in 30 runs and scored 62 runs.

 

Lewis had a .958 fielding percentage with 45 putouts, one assist and two errors in 48 total chances.

 

Pickering finished the season with a .396 batting average on 67 hits in 169 at-bats. Her hits included 15 doubles, three triples and a home run. Picking drove in 55 runs and scored 49 runs.

 

Pickering came away with an .882 fielding percentage on 15 putouts and two errors in 17 total chances.

 

In addition to their 52-8 record and a third-place finish in the national tournament, DMACc won its third consecutive Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) championship with a 26-2 record.
