The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team improved to 7-0 for the season with doubleheader sweeps of Coffeyville Community College (CCC) and Allen County Community College (ACCC) March 3 and 4.

The Bears, ranked fourth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, defeated CCC by scores of 11-0 and 10-3 March 3 at Coffeyville, Kan., and topped ACCC by scores of 8-4 and 7-0 March 4 at Iola, Kan.

Sophomore Molly Jacobsen of Adel tossed a two-hitter and struck out 12 in DMACC's opening game win over CCC. The Bears grabbed the lead with three runs in the first inning and closed out the win with an eight-run rally in the sixth.

Freshman Morgan Nealey of Urbandale led DMACC with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and four runs batted in. Freshman Mia Ruther of Burlington also had three hits and sophomore Taylor Briley of Creston had a pair of hits, including a home run, and drive in three runs. Sophomore Bre Hunter of Boone and freshman Kaisha Wells of Topeka, Kan., also hit doubles in the win.

Nealey singled and homered and drove in four runs and Wells hit a pair of solo home run to lead DMACC in the second game. The Bears scored twice in the third inning and pushed their advantage to 9-0 with seven runs in the fourth. CCC closed to 9-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth before DMACC closed out the win with a run in the top of the seventh.

Freshman Avery Guy of Cedar Rapids joined Nealey and Wells with two hits, including a double, and Hunter drove in a pair of runs for the Bears.

Sophomore Gabby Schnathorst of Carlisle pitched the first four innings and earned the win. She allowed two hits, struck out four and walked one. Freshman Alexis Groet of Oskaloosa pitched two innings, allowing three runs on three hits. She struck out three and walked one. Freshman Taylor Craven of Green worked one inning, allowing one hit and one walk.

Jacobsen was in the circle in the opener against ACCC and came away with her third win of the season behind a seven hitter. She struck out 13 and walked one and none of the four runs she allowed were earned. Jacobsen helped her own cause with a home run and five RBIs.

Hunter had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and two RBIs in the win and Nealey and Wells had two hits apiece.

Hunter and Wells each homered and drove in two runs to lead DMACC in the second game. The Bears led just 1-0 after four innings, but put the game out of reach with six runs in the top of the fifth. Wells had two hits in the win and Jacobsen drove in a pair of runs.

Groet went the distance to get the win. She allowed two hits, struck out eight and did not surrender a walk.

The DMACC softball team will travel to Mississippi March 10 to 14 for games against Jones County Junior College (JCJC), Itawamba Community College (ICC), East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) and Northeast Mississippi Community College (NEMCC). JCJC is ranked second in NJCAA Division II.
