DMACC volleyball team sweeps ECC to clinch a share of the ICCAC conference championship

 

Sophomore Coryl Matheny of Glenwood had 14 kills as the DMACC volleyball team swept Ellsworth Community College (ECC) October 25 at Iowa Falls to clinch as share of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) conference championship.

 

The Bears, 26-8 overall and 10-1 in the ICCAC, will share the title with Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) and Kirkwood Community College (KCC) which also won matches on Oct. 25. The title is the first since 2015 for DMACC.

 

The Bears defeated ECC by set scores of 25-16, 25-13, 25-17. Sophomores Zophi Hendricks of Defiance and Eden Wilson of Conrad had seven and six kills respectively and sophomore Monica Mirembe of Ankeny and freshman Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk had five kills apiece. DMACC hit .280 in the win, getting 40 kills from 100 attacks with 12 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Emma Flathers of Treynor led the Bears in assists with 33 and sophomores Jerica Heintz of Polk City and Kenya Prescott of Carroll had four and three ace serves respectively. Prescott led DMACC in digs with 16, Matheny had 12 and Flathers finished with 10. Hendricks had three block assists and sophomore Kylie Henry of Urbana added two.

 

The DMACC volleyball team, ranked 12th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), will be the No. 1 seed in the NJCAA Region XI Volleyball Tournament which begins Nov. 1. The seedings are based on the number of sets won by the three teams when they played each other. DMACC was 4-3 in sets against ICCC and KCC. KCC was 3-3 and ICCC was 3-4.

 

DMACC will host North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium in the first round of the Region XI tournament. The Trojans, the No. 8 seed, are 14-23 overall and 3-8 in the ICCAC. Their losses include a 3-0 setback to DMACC Aug. 30 at Mason City.

 

Semifinal matches will be played Nov. 4 at the home of the highest seeded team remaining in the tournament and the championship match will be played Nov. 5 at the site of the semifinal matches.

 

The Region XI champion will advance to the national tournament Nov, 15 to 18 at Cedar Rapids.
