DMACC volleyball team gets two wins in Triton Volleyball Invitational

The DMACC volleyball team put together a 2-1 record in the Triton Volleyball Invitational October 20 and 21 at Fort Dodge.

 

The Bears, ranked 12th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), opened tournament play with a 3-0 win over Metropolitan Community College (MCC) on Oct. 20 and then handed No. 16 Neosho County Community College (NCCC) a 3-2 loss in their second match of the day.

 

DMACC closed out the tournament with a 3-0 loss to second-ranked Cowley County Community College (CCCC) on Oct. 21.

 

After going 2-1 in the tournament, the Bears now stand at 25-8 for the season.

 

Sophomore Coryl Matheny of Glenwood had 17 kills and sophomores Zophi Hendricks of Defiance and Eden Wilson of Conrad and freshman Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk contributed 11, 10 and nine kills respectively as DMACC handed MCC a 25-17, 25-22, 26-24 loss. Matheny hit .438 in the win, Hendricks hit .417, Wilson came away with a .400 hitting percentage and Brenizer hit .412. As a team the Bears hit .373 with 56 kills from 126 attacks with nine hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Emma Flathers topped DMACC in assists with 48 and sophomore Kenya Prescott of Carroll and Matheny led the way in digs with 21 and 15 respectively. Benizehad seven blocks, including five block assists, and Wilson and Flathers had four blocks, including three block assists apiece.

 

Hendricks' 16 kills and 15 by Matheny led the Bears to a 25-21, 26-28, 25-18, 23-25, 15-7 win over NCCC. DMACC hit .264 in the win, getting 16 kills from 174 attacks with 17 hitting errors.

 

Flathers came away with 53 assists and Brenizer contributed three ace serves. Prescott led four DMACC players in double figures in digs with 23. Flathers had 20 digs, Matheny finished with 18 and sophomore Jerica Heintz of Polk City had 14. Sophomore Kylie Henry of Urbana led the Bears in blocks with three, including two block assists.

 

Matheny and Hendricks had 11 and 10 kills respectively in DMACC's 19-25, 25-27, 17-25 25 loss to CCCC. Wilson and Brenizer had seven kills apiece as the Bears hit .318 with 38 kills from 107 attacks with four hitting errors.

 

Flathers again led the way in assists with 35 and sophomore Maddie Dunham of Nevada contributed three ace serves. Matheny came away with a team-high 14 digs, Heintz had 12 and Prescott added 10. Henricks and Brenizer had three block assists apiece.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) matchup Oct. 25 at Iowa Falls. DMACC is 9-1 in the ICCAC. ECC is 27-4 overall and 7-3 in the ICCAC.
