DMACC volleyball team takes two of three matches in DMACC Invitational

The DMACC volleyball team ran its record to 20-7 overall by winning two of three matches in the DMACC Invitational October 6 and 7 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears, ranked 16th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), got 19 kills from sophomore Zophi Hendricks of Defiance in opening the tournament with a 3-1 win over eighth-ranked Heartland Community College (HCC). Sophomores Coryl Matheny of Glenwood and Eden Wilson of Conrad had 12 kills apiece in a 3-0 win over Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC) and sophomore Monica Mirembe of Ankeny came away with 11 kills as the Bears dropped a 3-2 decision to 12th-ranked Illinois Central College (ICC).

 

Hendricks hit .516 with her 19 kills coming from 31 attacks with three hitting errors as DMACC handed HCC a 28-26, 25-16, 17-25, 25-13 loss. Matheny had 12 kills and Wilson and freshman Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk added 11 apiece as the Bears hit .280 in the win. They finished with 58 kills from 143 attacks with 18 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Emma Flathers of Treynor topped DMACC in assists with 51 and Matheny came away with four ace serves. Sophomore Jerica Heintz of Polk City contributed two ace serves. Sophomore Kenya Prescott of Carroll led the Bears in digs with 25 and Matheny and Flathers finished with 17 and 12 respectively. Brenizer led DMACC in blocks with three, including two block assists, and Henricks, Flathers and Mirembe had two blocks apiece.

 

Matheny and Wilson came away with 12 kills apiece in the Bears' 25-21, 25-19, 29-27 win over MVCC. Wilson had a .409 hitting percentage with her 12 kills coming from 22 attacks with three hitting errors. As a team, DMACC hit .269 with 44 kills from 119 attacks and 12 hitting errors.

 

Flathers led the way in assists with 41 and sophomore Maddie Dunham of Nevada added two ace serves. Matheny led four players in double figures in digs with 20. Prescott had 16, Flathers added 16 and Heintz came away with 10. Flathers and Mirembe had three block assists apiece.

 

Mirembe's 11 kills paced DMACC in a 25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 21-25, 12-15 loss to ICC. Matheny added 10 kills as the Bears hit just .171 in the loss, getting 44 kills from 158 attacks with 17 hitting errors.

 

Flathers again led DMACC in assists with 40 and Matheny and Dunham had four and two ace serves respectively. Prescott topped the Bears in digs with 30. Flathers finished with 18 and Matheny had 17. Matheny also had two blocks, including one block assist.

 

The DMACC volleyball team, 6-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), faces Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Oct. 10 at Marshalltown. The Tigers are 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the ICCAC.
