DMACC volleyball team tops #20 Hawkeye, 3-1

Sophomore Coryl Matheny of Glenwood had 15 kills and hit .438 to lead the DMACC volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Hawkeye Community College (HCC) October 4 at Waterloo.

 

The Bears, ranked 16th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), came from behind to get the win. They dropped the first set, 25-7, but rebounded behind set scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 to improve to 18-6 overall and 6-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). HCC came into the match ranked 20th in the NJCAA Division II poll.

 

Matheny hit .438 with her 15 kills coming from 32 attacks with one hitting error. Sophomore Zophi Hendricks of Defiance had 11 kills, sophomore Monica Mirembe of Ankeny came away with eight and sophomore Eden Wilson of Conrad and freshman Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk finished with seven kills apiece. DMACC hit .309 in the win, getting 48 kills from 123 attacks with 10 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Emma Flathers of Treynor had 34 assists, 12 digs and two solo blocks. Sophomore Maddie Dunham of Nevada contributed three ace serves and nine digs to the win and sophomore Kenya Prescott of Carroll topped the Bears in digs with 22. Wilson had five block assists, Brenizer finished with four block assists and Hendricks also had four blocks, including three block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will host the DMACC Tournament Oct. 6 and 7 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears will face Heartland Community College (HCC) and Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC) on Oct. 6 and will meet Illinois Central College (ICC) on Oct. 7. HCC is ranked eighth in NJCAA Division II and ICC is ranked 12th.
