DMACC volleyball team goes 3-1 in NDSCS Tournament

The DMACC volleyball team improved to 13-3 for the season after winning three of four matches in the NDSCS Tournament September 15 and 16 at Wahpeton, N.D.

 

The Bears saw their seven-match winning streak come to an end behind a 3-0 loss to North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in their tournament opener on Sept. 15. They rebounded with a 3-2 win over Bismarck State College (BSC) in their second match of the day. DMACC then completed tournament play with a pair of 3-0 wins over Central State College (CSC) and Minnesota State Community and Technical College (MSCTC) on Sept. 16. CSC came into the tournament ranked 15th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III poll.

 

Sophomores Eden Wilson of Conrad and Zophi Hendricks of Defiance had 13 and 11 kills respectively as the Bears dropped an 18-25, 22-25, 20-25 decision to NDSCS. Wilson hit .478 with her 13 kills coming from 23 attacks with two hitting errors. As a team, DMACC hit .175, getting 35 kills from 114 attacks with 18 hitting errors.

 

Freshman Aquarina Thomas of Tucson, Ariz., had seven kills and sophomore Emma Flathers of Treynor topped the Bears in assists with 30. Freshman Lexie Lane of Renwick had a pair of ace serves and sophomore Kenya Prescott of Carroll led DMACC in digs with 23. Flathers and sophomore Kylie Henry of Urbana finished with two block assists apiece.

 

Freshman Abbi Brenizer of Norwalk had 14 kills and Wilson and Hendricks contributed 13 and 11 respectively in DMACC's 13-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-19, 15-8 win over BSC. Brenizer hit .314 with her 14 kills coming from 35 attacks with three hitting errors. The Bears hit .205 as a team, getting 62 kills from 185 attacks with 24 hitting errors.

 

Henry and sophomore Monica Mirembe of Ankeny finished with eight and six kills respectively and Flathers had seven kills and led the way in assists with 56. Sophomore Maddie Dunham of Nevada had three ace serves and sophomore Jerica Heintz of Polk City finished with two. Prescott led five players in double figures in digs with 43. Dunham had 18, Heintz and Flathers finished with 16 apiece and Lane had 14. Flathers and Henry topped DMACC in blocks with three apiece. Flathers had two solo blocks and Henry had three block assists.

 

Wilson and Hendricks had eight kills apiece and Brenizer and Mirembe had six apiece as DMACC topped CSC 25-12, 25-21, 25-9. The Bears hit .287 in the win, getting 32 kills from 94 attacks with 10 hitting errors.

 

Flathers finished with 32 assists and Dunham contributed five ace serves. Prescott led the way in digs with 25 and Henry had five block assists.

 

Hendricks had nine kills, Wilson, Brenizer and Mirembe finished with six apiece and Henry contributed five as DMACC took a 25-16, 25-14, 25-9 decision from MSCTC in the Bears' final match of the tournament. DMACC hit .356 with 37 kills coming from 88 attacks with just three hitting errors.

 

Flathers had 33 assists, seven digs and three blocks, including two solo blocks. Dunham and Henry had two ace serves apiece and Prescott came away with 14 digs. Dunham and Lane also reached double figures in digs with 10 apiece.

 

The DMACC volleyball team returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC) play Sept. 19 when the Bears face Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) inside the DMACC gymnasium. DMACC is 3-0 in the ICCAC. WITCC is 6-9 overall and 2-1 in the ICCAC.
