Loss to IWCC ends nine-match winning streak for DMACC volleyball team

The DMACC volleyball team saw its nine-match winning streak come to a halt February 24 when Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) handed the Bears a 3-1 loss inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

IWCC, ranked seventh in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I poll, won by scores of 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17. DMACC, ranked fifth in NJCAA Division II, fell to 9-3 for the season.

 

The Bears had one of more their more disappointing hitting matches at .194 with 43 kills coming from 134 attacks with 17 hitting errors. Freshman Kylie Welch of Davenport led DMACC with 12 kills and freshmen Anna Niehaus of Carroll and Emma McKinney of Lytton finished with seven apiece.

 

Freshman Morgan Tupper of Nevada topped DMACC in assists with 18 and freshman Elizabeth Pierce of Altoona contributed 17. Welch and freshman Rachel Eddy of Dubuque led the Bears in ace serves with three apiece and Eddy led four DMACC players in double figures in digs with 16. Tupper had 13 digs and Welch and sophomore Jordan Neely of Tiffin finished with 11 apiece. Sophomore Katelyn Courtney of Ames had four blocks, including two block assists, and freshman Abigail Maue of Center Point came away with three blocks, including two block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team travels to Waterloo to face Hawkeye Community College (HCC) Feb. 28. HCC, 8-2, was undefeated and ranked 12th when the Redtails dropped a 3-0 decision to DMACC Feb. 7 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
