DMACC volleyball team upsets fourth-ranked ICCC, 3-0
  • ICCC was 27-2 in sets before being swept by the Bears

Freshmen Kylie Welch of Davenport and Anna Niehaus of Carroll had 11 kills apiece as the DMACC volleyball team swept Iowa Central Community College (ICCC), 3-0, February 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Set scores were 25-21, 25-20, 25-22.

 

The win was the ninth straight for the Bears, who improved to 9-2 and atoned for a 3-0 loss to the Tritons Jan. 28 at Fort Dodge.

 

DMACC entered the match ranked ninth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll. The Tritons came in a No. 4, boasting a 9-0 record and a 27-2 mark in sets.

 

DMACC's win was its fourth against a ranked team this season. The Bears defeated then 12th-ranked Hawkeye Community College (HCC), 3-0 on Feb. 7, took a 3-0 decision from then 18-ranked North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) on Feb. 9 and handed Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) a 3-2 loss on Feb. 14. IHCC, an NJCAA Division I program, was ranked 14th at the time.

 

Welch and Niehaus hit .323 and .409 respectively in the win. Welch got her 11 kills from 31 attacks with one hitting error and Niehaus got 11 kills from 22 attacks with two hitting errors. As a team, DMACC hit .325 with 49 kills from 123 attacks with nine hitting errors.

 

Freshman Morgan Tupper of Nevada led the Bears in assists with 19 and freshman Elizabeth Pierce of Altoona added 17. Each contributed one ace serve.

 

Welch topped DMACC in digs with 17. Tupper added 16, freshman Rachel Eddy of Dubuque came away with 15 and sophomore Jordan Neely of Tiffin had 12. Freshman Abigail Maue of Center Point had three block assists and sophomore Katelyn Courtney of Ames also had three blocks, including two block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team faces another ranked team Feb. 24 when the Bears host Iowa Western Community College (IWCC). The Reivers are 9-3 and are ranked seventh in NJCAA Division I.
