DMACC volleyball team sweeps NIACC for fifth consecutive win
  • DMACC, ranked 20th, upsets 18th-ranked Trojans, 25-19, 25-15, 25-15
  • Victory comes on the heels of a 3-0 upset of 12th-ranked Hawkeye CC
  • Freshman Kylie Welch of Davenport leads the Bears with 14 kills and a .500 hitting percentage

 

The DMACC volleyball team recorded its fifth consecutive victory and its second straight upset of a ranked team with a 3-0 win against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) February 9 at Mason City.

 

The Bears, ranked 20th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, won by scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-15.

 

NIACC came into the match ranked 18th in NJCAA Division II and was the second consecutive ranked team to fall to the Bears. DMACC defeated No. 12 Hawkeye Community College (HCC), 3-0, Feb. 7 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The wins in DMACC's five-match streak have all been by 3-0 sweeps, giving the Bears victories in their last 15 consecutive sets.

 

Freshman Kylie Welch of Davenport led DMACC to the win over NIACC with 14 kills, a .500 hitting percentage and 10 digs. Her kills came from 26 attacks with one hitting error. DMACC hit .386 in the match, getting 38 kills from 88 attacks with four hitting errors. Freshman Anna Niehaus of Carroll added six kills to the Bears' attack and freshman Emma McKinney of Lytton had five.

 

Sophomore Morgan Tupper of Nevada and freshman Elizabeth Pierce of Altoona led DMACC in assists with 16 and 14 respectively and freshman Rachel Eddy of Dubuque topped the Bears in digs with 14. Tupper had a pair of ace serves, freshman Abigail Maue of Center Point had six block assists and McKinney contributed four blocks, including three block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will play Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) Feb. 11 at Norfolk, Neb. NECC is 1-5 this season.
